Advice on how to get to gasket for timing chain tensioner- '81 300D
Howdy,
I'm pretty sure my oil leak is coming from the timing chain tensioner gasket on my 1981 300D. The leak just ruined my alternator so I'm gearing up to fix it (plus my environmental conscience is feeling guilty for dripping oil on the roadways of America for several thousand miles). So here's the question: How does a person get to the gasket for the tensioner? I'll have the valve cover off to adjust the valves and I'm really hoping you experienced hands will tell me it's not too much extra work to replace the tensioner gasket from there. thanks, Randy |

If memory serves me correctly, I believe it works best if you take off the coolant thermostat housing off the head as well as the timing chain tensioner. This gives you a nice flat area on the side of the head that is easy to clean. And clean you must. I suggest a razor blade scraper and then sand paper.

Answer:
Remove the thermostat housing for access.
You should replace the water pump bypass hose when doing this job. Warning: There are two bolts and one manifold nut holding the tensioner, the housing will break if you forget any of these fasteners when removing the tensioner. #1. Remove the end cap from the tensioner. #2. Remove the spring. #3. Remove the two bolts and one nut that mount the housing. #4. Remove the tensioner housing. #5. Push the tensioner pin FORWARD out of the housing. #6. Clean the gasket surfaces. #7. Install the NEW gasket and housing to the engine block. #8. Install the two bolts and one nut that mount the housing. #9. Install the tensioner pin FORWARD into the housing. #10. Install the spring. #11. Install the end cap on the tensioner. You should replace the water pump bypass hose at this point. You should replace the engine thermostat at this point if it has not been replaced in the last two years. Clean the thermostat housing gasket surfaces. Install the thermostat housing. NOTE: If any cooling system hoses are hard or cracking, they need to be replaced now. Remove the cooling system cap. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the radiator, and fill the cooling system through this hose. Install the upper radiator hose. Install the cooling system cap.
