17degrees, car starts fine, manual tran difficult to shift.

Time to switch to synthetic? It wouldnt let me go into 3/4 this am until I worked through all the gears. Perhaps I will start doing this before I drive.

When cold, China grinds going into 3rd only on the first shift of the day when everything is still cold. Haven't replaced tranny fluid yet on this one....

what oil is in there? you may want to drain it and put in some mobil 1 atf or redline. if you have 30 weight in there now, it may be too thick in the cold to let the syncros mesh.

This is happening in Georgia? How cold is it?

On my manual truck, I had to have some tranny work done, and the shop refilled the tranny with a mixture of lighter motor oil and ATF. It shifts much better now in the winter. Before it was like stirring porridge.

this morning in Mt Holly NC, it was 17°F while we are a bit north of most parts of GA, they are at a higher elevation, so I figure similar weather.

Never dumped what was in there, probably time to do so. I heard it was pretty difficult to do?

Not really any different or more difficult than changing fluid in the diff.
Drains easier, harder to fill.
