Thumbs up Wow! It's a sweetheart!

Some German border patrol car that must have been turned out to be, back in 1951....

With a 40 hp engine in it, that thing couldn't outrun a rickshaw, not to mention chase down some poor refugee escaping from the "Sowjet Zone".

I wonder what the 0-60 times and top end are on that car.

Still, likely a major crowd pleaser, undoubtedly built from prewar plans, and probably has a wooden frame, and the essence of pure simplicity to wrench on.

Probably closer in ancestry to a 1937 260D than a 1999 300D turbo, and every inch a Mercedes Benz.

Nicest one I've seen so far but it's far from perfect. Looks like its only been cosmetically restored and only a fair attempt by the looks of the paint job and some of the electrical wiring. There's also a stiffener bar that looks added on behind the front seat. I guess someone used it to tighten the loose body. I bet it rattles like a Conestoga.

He means the body framing is wood. Looks pretty nice in the pictures.
If I lived closer and had the money laying about I would be tempted.

FWIW, I've got a 1956 VW beetle with a 36 hp engine.

It's quite nimble around town, and I have no trouble keeping up with city/secondary road traffic (mind you, it is a gasser).

The top end however is 68 mph.

My need for speed subsided years ago, at least on pavement. I'm an old 38. Or until I can afford a mid-life crisis.

The 170Ds are sweet cars. I bet it's impossible to find parts for.

I did a little research on them a few years ago. Most mechanical parts are available but probably pretty salty. Trim I imagine is tough to find.

Really lovely lines though. That color looks all wrong to me. That car should be maroon with black fenders or dark green.

Are the parts spendy or at they reasonably priced. Seems like most of the parts would come from Europe, making shipping a fortune.

According to my reference,'The Mercedes Benz Story', by Loius William Steinwdel, the 170Da OTP (Offener Tourenwagen fur Polizei) was a basic, spartan 4-door open tourer, with rubber floor mats, built for utilitarian police service. Most were phased out of German civil service in the '60s and sold off for the equivalent of under $100. Since then many have turned up 'restored' (read tarted-up) at vastly inflated prices. This car, with it's ugly 'Earl Sheib' mettalic green repaint, still has a certain charm, but is it really worth over $30,000?

Happy Motoring, Mark
