1967 200D Its ALIVE!!!!!!!!

Well yall I got the ole Benz running today. What an effort that took. I had to take all nozzles of the top of the pump off and clean the parts and the pistons. By doing this it loosed up the fuel rail which was stuck! And now the pistons move as they should as well. Got the pump bleed and fuel was getting to the Injectors. Finally after that it started! Really ran nice, Sounds like a real sweetheart! Only thing is there is a slight tick in what sounds like the valve train. It is very intermittent!! When you start it up it won't be there, then it will come in then out. When you rev it, it will come in. Sometimes when you rev it it goes away, sometimes comes it. I am not sure what it is but would like to figure it out.
What do you all think!
But hey it moved under its own power!!!!!!
Here is a picture of the cam to show chain stretch, and a video of it running.
Give me your thoughts!
Cheers

Could it be any of the rocker arms, or anything to do with the chain or tensioner making that intermittent tick?

The rockers should always behave the same way since they are mechanical adjusters....an intermediated tick might be from the cam chain tensioner or the vac pump.

I am assuming it has a vac pump.

That sounds like a little more than a ticking noise. Nice fuel tank. Congrats on the accomplishment. How is the rest of the car?

Its kind of a knock, but not nail, but maybe a deep tick. Its hard to say, it is so unven on how it does it, I will run so nice and smooth, then make that sounds, then go away, it changes with engine speed. I can't put a finger on it.
Yeah I had to use the can cause the tank is half full of ole cruddy diesel. So i have to drain and cflush tank. So the red can worked to get it started.
The rest of the car is vary nice, Once i figure the sounds out the car will make a great car!!

Did you fill the IP with oil? IIRC those early pumps had their own separate oil - they were not lubed from crankcase oil like the later ones.

The rythmic nature of that noise is puzzling...try to isolate it using a stethoscope or section of vacuum hose. If you can tell what area of the engine it is coming from it can help nail it down.

We tryed that and it seems it is coming from the valve train up front # 1 or 2 or in that area.

Do you think it could be just a sticky valve? After years of sitting that's possible. Are you getting good oil flow from all of the cam oilers?

I don't think so. I think it would have a little miss if it had a sticky valve, and that thing ran smooth. Didn't smoke, didn't rattle to death. And other then the noise it ran great.

Don't rely on the mark shown to indicate chain stretch. This is just a mark to aid in assembly and is not exact. The proper way to check it is to use a dial indicator to determine when the #1 valve (intake if I remember right) just starts to open, then check to see where the pointer is on the cranshaft balancer. Don't remember what it should be, but a good repair manual will say. Offset (expensive) keys are available for the cam gear to adjust this. If you go beyond what the keys can adjust, time for a new chain.

As for the ticking, make sure all your valves are adjusted right. Those injectors can also cause some odd ticking and pinging if they get dirty and are not spraying right. You will likely still need to take them out and clean the tips after a while of running. The timing being off a little can also change the sound of the engine and cause rattling and pinging. As long as the noise is not steady and constant, or always loud when you rev it up (rod out), I would just run it and blow some of the old crud out of the engine and fuel system.

Ok sounds great, I will have to get the dial gauge out and measure it correctly.
And as for the noise thanks for the insight. The noise is very intermittent so I will keep the injectors and what not in mind.
Thanks again,
Cheers
