Replaced my glow plugs due to hard starting, now it fires up instantly but won't hold an idle until it is warm.

I assume it has to be something with fuel delivery but can't find anything under the search.

How does your pre filter look? Your fuel filters might need to be changed.

Anybody else? I do think fuel is at least part of the problem but don't understand why it will only hold once it is warm???

How is the rack dampner, if so equipped? Is your '81 a Turbo model? I would also check filters, fuel lines, tank strainer, and you did not mention fuel type...BioD or VO, or pump diesel.

On my car the rack dampner was a bit too tight, and it would not idle until the engine was warm in cold weather. In '82 all w123 US spec diesels were turbo charged.

It is a turbo. Running pump diesel, replacing filters and doing purge hopefully this week. Have not looked at rack damper (?) will search that.
