You'll get a big bang out of it!

But most folks don't let it get that bad. You know, ya have to get under the old girl and check simple things like that out once in a while. Most of the problems are pretty visible, though you might well bring a flash light along.

I had a slight clunk on downshifts and a vibration from under the console only between certain speeds.

The rubber was torn on the driveshaft support and my flexdiscs were in bad shape. As stated by Jim, you need to crawl under a take a look. When a flexdisc fails it can be catastrophic.

If you see even a smidgeon of a crack they should be replaced.

Agreed.
Mine had no cracks and appear perfect (in fact you can have em cheap)but the center bearing support rubber was bad and I had a vibration at highway cruising speeds. I changed the disks and disk bolts anyway since the drive shaft had to come off anyway. Although the disks I took off look perfect I am new to the car and have no idea how old they are. I wouldn't hesitate to reuse them on a non turbo ... if they are the same?

I had a rhythmic thump @ low speeds, it increased w/ speed (not rpm) but the thump didn't 'match up' w/ the rotational speed of the tires (it was too fast) if that makes any sense. Mine were really shot.

I had a bad carrier bearing. It made a klunking noise when I started to roll, the changed to a slight vibration when under way. When I changed it out i replaced the flex discs as a matter of preventitve mantinence as the driveshaft was out anyway.
