last summer A friend of mine got stopped in a 1 ton diesel dump truck w/ a bobcat on the trailer. dipped the tanks, all OK. but it goes to show what they look for- trucks w/ access to off road diesel, such as used in the bobcat.

have not heard of a pass car getting dipped, except in internet land

with OTR trucks, it is common.

I suppose they will be sniffing pipes for french fries soon though.

AFAIK, the die is also a chemical tracer, and atf excuse will get you no where, as the red died fuel will also show up on a bit of test paper they carry.

there was an article in the charlotte paper last race at nascar thing here, enforcement noticed the biodiesel sticker on a MB in the outfield, and dipped and cited the owner. MAJOR political upheaval over it. I believe the fines were dropped after public outcry over it... I will see if I can find the article from the observer archives.

I have to wonder what the fine is for running hydrogen power, or LP gas, or an electric vehicle?

Friends and family in Germany, have been caught, with a test strip at the exhaust pipe, w/ engine running.

This is pretty close to what I am looking for, except it is Bio, not off road diesel.

The bottom line as I see it is.....They just don't care.

If I was up north, you can bet my return line would be bleeding fuel oil. That is pretty close to diesel with 500 ppm of that wonderful, lubricating, sulfer.

i used to run red dyed fuel in my 240d in california, never got pulled over it was all free from my shop, they had thousands of gallons of the stuff and they would just give me a tank every week.

I know what you're thinking. "Will I get caught or not?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is big fine, the most expensive fine you probably will run into in the world, and would blow your head clean open, you've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky?....Well, do ya punk?

It's been several years, but yes my 300SD has been dipped in south Arkansas. I haven't seen the IRS fellows who do the dipping in a long time, but once is enough to keep the red stuff out.

Is sulfur a lubricating agent? I thought it was the wash process that removed sulfur that caused a drop in lubricating properties in ULSD.

No it isn't, you are correct.

sulfur is a great lubricating agent, and it's cheap. But it's not so great for the world. Biodiesel is a even greater lubricating agent and it has close to no sulfur.

From Wikipedia

"Sulfur is not a lubricant, however the process used to reduce the Sulfur also reduces the fuel's lubricating properties. Lubricity is a measure of the fuel's ability to lubricate and protect the various parts of the engine's fuel injection system from wear. The processing required to reduce sulfur to 15 ppm also removes naturally-occurring lubricity agents in diesel fuel."

But whether you really need it or not is not determined yet. Also bio has lower BTU content.
