Well to bring closure, it runs again only this time in a 1980 300GD. I got it from John, bought some parts, scrounged some parts and it's back together. Had to jump through some hoops to get the 5-speed to mate up, but it's there. 237k miles, right Joe? 137k from the junkyard + 100k in your hands?

I'll post some more details including pics later, but it was funny to find it was your ex-engine considering that you posted in this thread of mine asking about it:

Nice! I, for one, would love to know what broke in this motor.

nazrat 11-28-2010 11:02 AM

It wasn't something IN the motor, but rather the flex plate. It had broken and jammed into the bellhousing.

For the record, the flywheel from the automatic was neutrally balanced, and thankfully the flywheel from my 5-speed was too so it was an easy swap. I had to finish "machining" the inside of the crankshaft to accept a pilot bearing but it wasn't that hard with a brake cylinder hone.

 Really?! Wow! I don't think I've ever heard of that happening. I've heard of fracturing causing noise, but never jamming an engine. Never would have thought of that. Sounds like you might have a darned good motor on your hands.

I am glad Bruno's heart lives on...

Yeah, it was that damned flex plate. I think when the engine was mated to the transmission, one bolt worked loose after 100,000 miles and that then cracked the flex plate. When it jammed against the bell housing it STOPPED the engine and I mean STOPPED!

John and I were at a loss and I did not want to put more time and money into the rusty '81 so I got the '86 SDL to replace it.
It was only way after I got the SDL that the engine came out of the SD and the culprit was found! ARRRRGH!

Oh well as I said, I am glad part of Bruno lives on...
It is a darned good engine - it was babied by me with straight highway miles (168 miles a day round trip) and oil changes with Rotella synthetic every month! (3400 miles)

Here are some pictures of a cracked flex plate.

Good to see it runs again Tad, Joe, Bruno was taken to his final resting place last tuesday after a vigorous strip down a week ago saturday, it's hood and core support found their way onto brainlair's 84 300SD so he will be rolling with a black hood on my former cream 300SD until it's time for a paint job ;)

How did that flex plate on the back of the engine...
cause the symptoms concerning the oil pressure ?

+1

What causes fluctuation like that in the oil pressure gauge?
