In the District of Columbia they have a lot of speed bumps . . . They're what we call "pot holes" in most other areas. You know how those folks in Washington like to spin everything.

That said though, in those real quiet neighborhoods, noise can travel a long, long way, especially at night when they get real quiet. Your exhaust might not have been loud with the normal daytime ambient, but it might have seemed a bit louder than normal against the nightime ambient.
It probably didn't help that there were two cops sitting next to each other chatting in their cars about 20 feet from where I drove past.....it was all too likely to happen. "Hey, we're bored, lets go pull that guy over."...something like that.

Twenty inches? Just how does one test that, technically speaking? Cop hangs out the window of the cruiser and they pace you while accelerating? Sounds like it was a law made to be creatively interpreted.

Dunno about yours, but on mine the engine clatter completely masks any exhaust noise!

I'm of the opinion that bored has little to do with it. Just imagine how chewed out they'd get if some citizen peeked out their window after hearing such an obviously too loud vehicle go by, only to see two cops just sitting there in their cruisers yakking away watching it go by too but doing nothing?

Even dogs know to be nice to the person who feeds them

Yes, I agree. Oh well. I avoid that area at night now. I can make all the noise I want on the road I take now. Cleans out those cylinders.

I found a guy on YouTube who straight piped his 300TD wagon....sounds exactly like my car does. Of course in this video he is punching the throttle to the max and taking off full tilt.....when I got pulled over it was for a barely-touching-the-pedal gentle acceleration to 25mph....just goes to show what they think is "loud".

Here's the video:

And I managed to revive my enormous thread!

I barely got my first "loud exhaust" run in with the Federal Heights PD tonight. With my new VNT vane bypass unit installed, my exhaust can be quite loud when I want it to be.

The officer had pulled over a car into a gas station, presumably for speeding. The red light I was going towards turned green, so I got one of those "what the hell" moments and dropped it into 2nd, flicked open the vanes and went full bore up to the 35mph speed limit.

I get to my apartments and get out to check my mail, leaving my engine idling and my hazards on. On my return to the car who else should happen to pull up other than good ol' Johnny Law. I wave, smile and pause as I wait for him to say/do something. He just turns his car around and leaves. He didn't even roll down his window.
