Shift gate problem.
I have a 1983 240d that has been converted to a 4speed. What is wrong is, the shift "points" or the "gates" on the shifter are out of whack, when i try to go into first, i have to press very carefully to make it go into first and not reverse, because i do not have to pull up on the stick in order to put it into reverse, it just seems like it veers off to the left.. (Sorry guys ive never torn into the trannys before..)

Are you sure it`s the trans. that is the problem? If you don`t have to pull
up to go into reverse, it sounds like the problem is in the shift gate. maybe check out your local P N P for a different shift gate. not hard to remove. Try taking it apart, might just need a cleaning and lube job. Charlie

Maybe your transmission mounts are bad, allowing the transmission to move more than it should, making the shift points harder to locate. Just a thought.

When you get it figured out, let us know.
I have all the parts out of an 83 240 we removed Dec 31 @ PNP. These parts are just itching to get installed. Now just the wait for the automatic to give us trouble. Charlie

If you have a Haynes manual, there is a very good writeup of the shifter in there. I would take a very close look at the shifter mechanism under your rubber boot. It's easy to rebuild/rebush and can make a world of difference.

Most likely the shifter bushing is bad (not to be confused with the bushings connecting the shifter with the trans). This bushing is located on the left side of the shifter mechanism. You should be able to see it if you lift the console. Note - there are two types of bushing - one is a soft plastic with one closed end that holds a spring in place, the spring biases the lever out of reverse. The other type is an open ended bushing. If you order one from Fastlane you will get the openended type. This is not a difficult fix if you can get the right bushing.

Very true. Not too hard to change the shift bushing as noted in prev post. I think the shifter has to be removed, unfortunately, to get it apart though.
Change that and lube the parts with some bearing grease and it will shift better than new. Tom W
