Hey Forced (and any other big truck guys)-Any thoughts on Titan 125 starters?
 
We've got a '98 IH 8100 w/the Cummins M-11 that I think will need a starter replacement in the near future. If it's plugged in it starts fine but if not (if driver overnights or takes it home with him to leave early morning) the starter really seems to be laboring more and more. The batteries are a year old.

Someone recommended the Titan gear reduced starters for cold weather starting. Any good? Other brands to look at other than whatever the dealer is peddling?

Do you think it will do a cold morning start with the reduced cranking speed you are going to suffer when you put on that geared starter. If you gear it down 25 percent, you probably won't loose 25 percent speed, because the starter will not be bogged down. But it will be slower. Might be well worth the 2 or 3 gallons of fuel to keep the old Cummins running on those cold nights.

I thought gear-reduction starters give faster cranking, not slower. Not so? Steve

That was my understanding, that was the basis of the recommendation. But to be honest I'm not entirely sure.

Gear reduction starters are great! At swift some of the Cummins ISX engines have a traditional starter and some have gear reduction. The RPM difference between the two is very noticeable, between 50-100rpm higher.

If my 617's starter fails I'm going to get a Mean Green reduction starter.

Ouch....$300. I remember wanting to put one of those mean green starters on the old CJ I had in high school. I didn't have the funds then either:(.

Has anybody here ever put one on their MB?

MercedesRover has one on his 616 powered rover and Breckman99 has one on his 300SD.

Cool, thanks for the info. I think we will go that route. It's been an expensive 2 weeks for us. Just got done repairing the front driver corner of the box where it met a decent sized branch at 30 mph (stupid thing stands 13'6" for no good reason other than that the curtainside box we found was taller than we needed it to be) while we had it in the shop to get a Jake Brake installed. Might as well throw a new starter at it while I'm still writing checks.

I'll definitely keep that Mean Green info. handy for future reference for my TD, too.
