called the dealer. the line costs $134 and there's only one left in the US. looks like it will be patch time. will fuel line be ok with transmission fluid?

That price sounds about right, I had to wait about a week for mine because they had to order it from germany. Make sure you order the grommets too.

Fuel line should be OK for a temporary patch, mine was OK for at least a week with fuel line. I just used a tubing cutter to take out the broken area and put the hose in place with a couple of clamps.

I've installed secondary transmission coolers in a couple of cars and the instructions included cutting the metal lines and slipping rubber lines over the metal and hose clamping them. One of those coolers has been on the car for 14 years and is still working fine. So, yes, a rubber hose repair is basically permanent.

No, you do not have to drain the tranny to fix the line. You will need to add some fluid though, since some got pumped out before you shut down the engine.

kerry, thanks for the confidence booster in that rubber hose repair. i'll do it in the morning.

grassi, i appreciate the go ahead too.

so to recap:

1) cut the lines beyond the kink/crack and remove bracket no draining of the fluid required.

2) slip rubber hose over both ends

3) hose clamp with probably 4 clamps going opposite directions.

p.s. one repair guy i talked with talked about doing some flare technique. i didn't know what he was talking about. is that with a compression fitting or a rubber hose or am i completely missing the boat?
