Yet another outrageous fuel economy claim

I came across this Kijiji Ad today, in which the seller states that his 1984 Mercedes 300D will travel 500 kms on $20 dollars of fuel.

I did the math, and at the local price of diesel, ($1.09.4 per litre) $20 will buy you 18.28 litres. Dividing by 4.546 litres per Canadian gallon gives you 4.02 gallons of diesel.

500 kms is equal to 310 miles. So 310 miles per 4.02 gallons works out to just over 77 miles per gallon!

Has anybody on this forum been able to achieve fuel economy remotely approaching this? Even downhill, and with a tail-wind?

I'm half considering purchasing the car, and then suing the seller for misrepresentation.

The old Oaken Noggin, eh?

My bicycle doesn't do that well! Still, it might be OK at that price.

Maybe he's referring to topping off the tank :D

ForcedInduction 01-16-2008 02:43 AM

Maybe he means you can do 500KM and have $20 of fuel left. :D

turbobenz 01-16-2008 03:00 AM

or maybe he means he makes biodiesel, which is like 70 cents a gallon if you make it

Buy the car if you like but forget the lawsuit.

Gosh,

My 300D is so economical I have keep siphoning fuel OUT of the fuel tank, or it overfills when I drive it.

If your burning stuff you're not paying for (tranny fluid, motor oil, WVO, etc) wouldn't you include that in mileage calcs? Can't wait to sell my 280CE and drive my diesel full-time and start getting estimates.

Jim

Mine only does that when I drive extensively in reverse :D

I can't even come close to that in my 190DT! You're right, it is an outrageous claim.

That's the car I bought!

I hadn't seen the guys' kijiji ad, but I saw it on Craigslist. Don't have the ad handy, but I don't recall seeing any claims as to mileage on it. I recognise it cos the drivers door moulding was missing (still is) and the front grill has the star and emblem missing as well as looks like someone whacked a few golf balls at it.

Its running great so far though, and really have no (big) complaints about it. Since Mid-December 07, I've been getting about 24.47 US MPG. I may be wrong about this figure though, as the last time, when I filled up with just $12 of diesel, my MPG calculations worked out to just 13.03 MPG . Furthest I''ve dared to go on a tank was 708 kms and that netted 36.01 MPG.

I know, I know, I should've paid more attention at math class :P

These cars only get the fantantic mileage while listed on Craigslist/ Ebay.

After the listing period they revert to the 23 - 26 MPG.

funny

I think its funny that there is so much outrage here over posts on craigslist and ebay. Hey, we're talking about craigslist and ebay. Its not J.D. Powers or MotorTrend. What posters are saying in words is right in line with what you'd hear from the guy curbstoning in the Safeway parking lot. I suggest that we ShopForumers use outrageous claims (to our advantage) as a stupidity baramoter when/if you decide to negotiate. Respectfully submitted.

The seller didn't state the price he paid for the fuel, and, therefore, you don't know how much fuel he actually purchased.

Good luck with that.............

NoSnooz 01-16-2008 07:35 PM

I can only get around 30-32 MPG (mostly highway) with my 190D 2.2 auto. These BS claims tick me off. The po of my car said he was getting 44 MPG - yeah, right!
