Are XYG Chinese made windshields any good for W126?

My W126 windshield has cracks, and my Insurance Company is allowing me to have it replaced.

I picked a nationally recognized glass company (they come to your house) and they said when I requested Sigla, Sekurit or PPG for this car, they could not get these.

They sent a guy here who is now just removing my cracked Sigla windshield and is going to replace it with a windshield called XYG.

I have never heard of these and some information about them is NOT very reassuring.

http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/273/RipOff0273004.htm

"XYG" is a Chinese company - Xinyi Glass its called.

Am I getting gamed by the glass company, or is this brand acceptable these days?

Also, my confidence is not exactly enhanced by the facts that the Installer

1. Did not know how to open the hood of the car, and I had to do it.

2. Barely speaks English, and is from Laos.

3. Said he was in a hurry, and has to go to two more jobs (in Marysville, a half an hour away from here)

Guys, do I have grounds for concern? What do you think?

The guy is are doing the windshield install right now......

Hi Jim,

Why did you let them come if they said they didn't have what you wanted...I guess I would have just called around and found someone who could supply one of the OEM brands and avoided the chinese one but I have no knowledge of how good or bad it is.

Glass standards

Does not California have windshield glass quality standards?
As progressive as California is in everything else automotive,
I would imagine they do.

'From the URL you posted and the comments there ,I'd be greatly concerned.
'Contact your state assembly-person's constituent assistant about the
applicable law.

Hell, aren't there Federal auto glass standards?

(Worst possible case: "Someone" drops a brick into the "New" WS before
it gets you in trouble. Then make sure you get a real piece of safety glass.)

In Georgia you can use wax paper instead of glass. and not get stopped.

BUT,If you're pulling skiers on roller blades, behind your boat,on it's trailer, while it's being pulled by your truck...all parties including the truck operator must be wearing their Personal Flotation Devices.

There are also standards for not using lead paint in toymaking...a lot of good they do.

Could there be lead in the glass .

If the build quality of their cars is an indicator, run.

My insurance company will only put in OEM glass if there's OEM glass there. If it's el-cheapo, then el-cheapo is all they need to buy.

I always get E code windshields, they have a higher impact standard, have a heavier outer-laminate. The inner is not as thick to compensate, it takes a rock better though, I've hit rocks that will nearly deafen the occupants, without a crack.

Yeah it was them.

The windshield was installed. I'm letting the car sit inside the garage for a day before I drive it anywhere, to let the adhesive cure properly. Looks like a pretty good install job to me.

There are a few small scratches on the left side of the outside of it though.
I noticed them when I got inside the car to stick it into the garage.

There WAS a notice printed on the sticker on the glass that said "Approved by the TUV"

The TUV is the VERY strict German Government automobile roadworthiness inspection agency, so there is some hope there.

Then again, a sticker can say ANYTHING it wants to, without regard to actual facts or truth.

My father told me about a Japanese ceramics company that built a factory in a company town it had constructed.

The town was named Usa, Japan.

Every piece of ceramics made there proudly carried the slogan: "MADE IN USA" !!!!

I had a Pilkington put in my SDL 3 or 4 years ago, the insurance company covered it. I wanted Sekurit which is OE, but the glass guy couldn't get it. Pilkington is OE for Volvo so I figured it was good enough.

Right before I put the SDL away back in November a nice rock took a chunk out of it, so I'll get it replaced next year. Its due anyway they just don't last, if you do any kind of highway driving they just get chipped to hell.

It probably doesn't matter chances are you will be replacing it again. It sounds like you have a pretty bad company doing it as well, the guy that did mine was familer with W126's.
