CONCLUSION

Well it was a bearing Lost a seal and pitted her up pretty good. The only good moral to the story is I caught it real early which may be attributed to knowing my car and recognizing a new sound. Life goes on for the SDL.

I replaced both sides EVERTHING. This is definitely a foo-bar on my part. I simply repacked the bearings last spring without putting them in solvent and taking the old grease out. I did this Saturday to the old bearing and it shook like a tambourine. Definitely original bearings with 250K on them. Live and Learn

SKF, I presume.

How did they look? SKF quality runs the gamut.......depending on the location of the plant........

The condition of the rollers and the cage tells all.

Yes SKF dyslexic this AM. The outside of the bearing flange said Made is USA - but I know that can be misleading. They looked good, it was my only choice locally other than going up to MB. There wasn't much left of my hundred dollar bill for everything.

I ask the question because I'm probably going to do the same thing to the SD when I pull the front end apart. While the original bearings might be acceptable, I'm not counting on it. All four for $100. is probably about typical now.........

The outer fronts were done on the SDL at some point, I last had them apart 4 years ago and they looked good. They last a long time, AFAIK the rears are original.

TX,

I had a noise I thought might be wheel bearings. Turned out to be the bearing in the center of the driveshaft.

I had that thought early on knowing how noises can move around the drive train.
