PLAY What's that W126 Road Noise
Car = W126 300SDL
Basics Alignment in last 45 days by MB - handles perfect Tires - New <1000 miles The noise started two weeks ago and basicaly sounds like I have snow tires on the front. Did the coast the hill in Neutral test and the noise is not engine related. Had the tires rotated and re-balanced yesterday, checked the front hubs for bearing noise and looseness - all OK. Anyone have any ideas on where to chase this? As stated this just started about two weeks ago. Tires are Turanza 205/65/15 which is similar to tire that was replaced.

Does the noise change when you swing the wheel left and right while moving at reasonable speed?
If so, front bearings are suspect. Jim

Jim, that was the first thing I tried - in hopes it was a bearing, I can deal with bearings. Noise remains the same after about 30mph with no variance.

Lacking any further details........and excluding the tire..........the bearings remain the primary suspect.
There really isn't anything rotating that can cause such a noise other than the bearings or the tire. While it's possible the tire can cause it..........you can easily rule this out by rotating to the rear. |

When my fleabay 240D arrived a year ago, it also had a front wheel grinding noise and I thought it was the bearings. After replacing them, the noise remained. It turned out to be a break pad that had seperated from the backing plate and was rubbing against the rotor. Noise disappeared after replacing brake pads.

wheel bearings
Iam sure wheel bearings are your problem.
I first heard the noise it was real faint. sounded like gear noise. after about 3000 miles it sounded like snow tire noise and coming from the L/F. so chainged the tire, still there. Finally pulled off the hub, and the inner bearing cage was starting to deform. called Phill, replaced the bearings. all quite now. Charlie

Rotate the tires, see if that changes anything.
If your wheel bearings have never been touched its never a bad idea to repack them. They really should be repacked every 100k, but no one ever does.

A fairly sensitive but not conclusive test for a suspected bad wheel bearing. Jack up the suspect side of the car. Get someone to spin the wheel. Put your fingertip on some metal in the vicinity of the knuckle. Sometimes you can feel the irregularity even with no load and no noise. Comparison to the otherside gives you a standard. Needless to say both sides should feel the same. You may have to push the pads back off the rotors a little to do this.

Hey, guys, he said he rotated his tires and the sound didn't go away, and he's inspected his bearings and they look fine.
Have you replaced the brake hoses? The hoses, when they get old, look good but are collapsing internally -- and intermittently -- working like one-way valves and restricting or stopping the flow of brake fluid. This can cause the calipers to close partially or fully. You'll hear the roaring sound of them dragging -- lightly or not -- against the rotors. If you take the caliper off, it will likely work just fine, but those hoses are sneaky beasts. They're not expensive -- about $20 each -- and worth replacing all around so you don't have to later replace calipers & rotors all 'round! Hope you find your problem -- please post when you fix it so we'll all know.

OK - I'll pull the hubs off and take a look at the bearings.
Sunny - The brake hose dilemma has bitten me before. Actually keep a couple hoses on the shelf. It's not that big of a deal to tear it down to the spindles and see what's happening. Even if the bearings are OK repacking them does give a person some piece of mind.

Yeah, I just changed 'em all 'round one car at a time as I had cash and time, time being more the problem! I'm not completely through, but getting there. However, things like ball joints, guide rod mounts, mistaken rear ends, and a trashed engine are taking priority.
As for repacked bearings = peace of mind, I'd have to agree. A question was raised a while back that I never saw answered -- how much grease? One of our wise souls on here said too little would cause the obvious problems but too much would overheat. What I'd need is a Goldilocks to tell me how much is "just right." Let us know what you find out.

I pack the bearings and coat the inside of the rotor with a thick layer. some just pack the bearings and coat the spindle shaft with grease, it's really not a big deal, just don't pack the thing so tight that you can't put the cap back on... that stuff sure does make a mess when it blows out the inner seal.

I guess my preventative maintenance schedule is off. Just did the 500SE two weekends ago - should have done the SDL. I repacked these when the brakes were done in May. Maybe just catching it early but we will know before the sun goes down.
