Transmission from 85 into an 82

.

We were looking to install a transmission from a 1985 300D
into a 1982.

There seems to be at least one difference.

On the 82 there is a cable coming out of the tail shaft
where there is a sensor on the 85.

What the heck is this cable / sensor ?

Will this transmission swap work ?

Thank You
RichC

Just a side thought, that 85 rear end would be a score for the guys with manual 300Ds.

it's hard to believe that none of the knowledgeable techs are weighing in on this... perhaps a pm to Brian Carlton is in order. try emailing roy (whunter) at the fastlane/buy parts link and ask them. I would think it would work, but you may need some of the parts from the 85 to go with the transmission. I would certainly snag that rear end, and the speedo cluster to match! get better fuel mileage and a higher top speed!

There is a sensor near the top front of an '85 which is the tach pickup for that model. I don't know of any wiring other than the neutral safety switch. All of the W123's have a manual speedo cable as far as I know.
Could this tranny have come from a W126?
If you get it I would just leave the tach pickup on the tranny so there won't be an opening for water to get in.....

You need to do some searching a few years back on here. I am pretty sure there are some issues. The TC is different. Actually there are a lot of differences on the 85. I think most of them are improvements, but IIRC they aren't as reliable. Please search.

Sensor in place of cable on tailshaft indicates a W126 tranny.
Tailshafts can be swapped.

Torque converter on a 85 has a higher stall speed.
Just reuse the earlier converter.

I installed a 85 trans from a W126 into a 83 300SD W126, and reused the TC, works fine.

The '85 has two kinds of transmission - 722.416 for Cal. and 722.3?? for the Fed version. They are almost similar. I dont know if the parts are interchageable. My tranny has two cables going to the tailshaft, the speedo cable and the kickdown cable or wire. Im not sure if the Cal. version will fit the 82. It has a different starter but the federal version will.

The 85 Transmission is not as durable as the earlier models were? I heard just the opposite. My 1983 300D has a Federal 85 Transmission because when my 83 started having problems, it was easier just to swap them out at the time!
I have the kickdown cable and a speedometer cable. The sensor should be for the tachometer on the 1985.

I think the the transmission came from an SD and not a D.

I think the cable is the speedometer in the D.
Where the SD has a sensor and a wire.

Anyone know if I can just switch the wire and the sensor ?
Or will I need to switch out the whole tail shaft ?

Thanks for the help guys !
Have Fun !

I have not looked at the two trannies, but logic would dictate that at least the tailshaft housing would need to be changed, if not some gears on the tailshaft itself

Doesn't the 1985 W123 300D have an electric speedometer like the SD's? Seems like this has been stated here several times. Have an 85 parts car, but it is not close enough to check at this time.

So the doner tranny many have came from a D or an SD.

Anyone know how to get the speedometer to work in the 82 D.
Using a 85 sensor style transmission ?

Thank you
RichC

do you have the two trannies sitting side by side? dissassemble them and see what can be swapped over.

That is part of the problem.
The transmissions are in the garage of the guy that is working for me.
And I have not seen them since delivery.

Thanks
