Which way to adjust trans modulator?

I have a customers '83 300D wagon that is shifting harshly. I have vacuum to the modulator. Which way do you turn the "T" to soften the shifts? Thanks

Harsh shifting is due to low vacuum. I would first check the entire vacuum system to make sure the system does not have a leak ( consider isolating the door lock and ACC system first ). If the system checks out OK then you turn the modulator counter clockwise for harsh shift. Clockwise for flaring.
I bet you have a leak somewhere in the vacuum system.

counter clockwise = softer
clockwise= firmer
but do as dmorrison suggests also

You should not have to adjust the modulator at the transmission unless someone turned up the pressure(clockwise) You should be able to fix all the other components in the vacuum system to get it to shift normal again. Otherwise a prematurely failing transmission may be its fate.

Motorhead -- please read THIS THREAD. It gave me all the info I needed to make my low-mileage replacement tranny in my 82SD operate like it is fresh off the showroom floor.
