The link below gives a good overview. Is for the 617. They have not changed much and the principals are the same.

What are you wanting to do?

Sorry, Terry I had the glow plugs changed because when I first start it it smokes and chugs it`s all right after that when warmed except it has a slight miss at higher speeds more a sound than a miss. The mechanic[ not yery enthusiastic] check the glows because it started doing the same thing the next day after it cooled overnight and said they were fine and a fuel inj. might be bad and they don`t test them.I`m now going to take out the injectors and have them tested a $3 each at a Standyne Diesel shop it`s a highly respected product, I don`t know if you`ve heard of it? I notice the inj. closest to the firewall has some leakage and the return hoses there are moist, I`ve changed almost the entire fuel sys. and I`ve been out work so this is really getting $ by the way thanks for answering and your help if you look on the cars for sale section I`ve had a lot of replies from people about the way I respond to certain issues as I told a young man from Canada all the money and frustration that these models can involve and two M.b. mechanics told me they had sold them because of all problems and thats the Gods honest truth, I`m just hoping mine might leave me alone long enough to enjoy it and I have spent over $6k thanks again, Michael [Skydog] ps I get a loud humming as I accelerate not when idling or racing engine at a stop in park no rattling or exhaust leaks but its loudddd! some opinions, cat convert. mas air flow, changed 3 times since new, turbo? no loss of power no eng. light on drive shafts no rattles just a deep loud hum.

Get the inj's pop and spray tested. Is cheap enough and a bad spray pattern could cause the issues you describe.

Inj's dont leak typically. Return lines do. You could try cutting a 1/2" off the end of the return line you think is leaking (if its long enough) to see if that would seal it.

"I get a loud humming as I accelerate..."

Mine makes more noise than it should when I accelerate also, but I am sure mine is due to bad motor mounts. The "hum" is directly related to engine speed and I can feel it in the steering wheel.
