If the right one comes up, I may go for it.
My search of archives did not come up with opinions, so what do you think?? Best year for 300CD, feature-benefit? Also do the window moldings (rubber) usually leak in rain? Looks like this could be a common problem. Thanks!!!!

unkl,
Because I own one, I pay attention to comments on CD's. I don't recall any specific discussion of a "better" year. The turbos came in about 81 (I think) and do make a difference in performance. As far as I can tell, the 300CD is just a shorter, lower 300D model with two doors. Mostly, I like the look of the car. My '85 does not leak at all. The rubber around the doors/windows has cracked in places and I'd like to replace it but thats costly. As I'm sure you know, all 300 diesels can leak from a variety of places (trunk, hood drains, sunroof, back window seal) and smart owners keep drains clear and periodically check for water incursion. Good luck with your search. Nic in SC |

For the W123 cars, the turbo diesel was installed starting in model year '82. Well, for the U.S. market that is. They may of introduced it earlier in Europe.

The lady where I bank has had a 84 300CD since new, and every time I left the bank...there it was. A true classic in its own time! It wasn't long till she probably dreaded me coming into the bank. I tried everything to get that car. Then about four years ago there was one EXACTLY like hers (and this is a one horse town) on the corner for sale.
It was the longest Fourth of July weekend in my life. The guy that owned it was up in the mountains for the holiday. Well he finally came down, we took it for a spin, then we made a deal. I really bought it for my daughter just out of high school. She took it to a neighboring town one Saturday, and I guess I didn't tighten the oil filter top when I changed the oil and she ran it dry. A coupla grand and two or three months of every nite and every weekend in the garage later...and.... it happened...we've been inseparable..until a young lady in a half ton Chevy slammed a full sized Dodge van into a Blazer who slammed into my right rear fender. So now its totaled, I've had bids from $4700 to $5700. I took the pay off from the insurance and bought it back. I've been five months trying to find a way to rationalize fixing it but it just doesn't figure. It just has to go for scrap..only thing that makes sense. The picture I posted here is how it looks today, the good side naturally. Now that I went on forever, I'll answer your original question. I really believe you would be best off with the newest model as long as it doesn't have the "trap oxidizer" on it. I believe that the 85s' were the only ones with them. I bought a 81SD since the wreck and there definitely is a difference in turbo and no turbo. The older ones (prior to 81) had a servo for the climate control, and they are troublesome and $pensive. I have had more compliments on this car than I can even remember. I've had kids come up along side me at a light and roll their window down and tell me how much they liked it. Once when I used to do donuts, I caught this guy out in the parking lot going over it like it was a new secret exotic prototype. Take your time and look at everyone you can. I checked autotrader.com the other day, and there were about fifteen or twenty of them there. Be patient and good luck. Ernie Last edited by Dirty Ern; 07-30-2001 at 03:13 PM. |

What is a CD-T? I thoufgt the "T" was for transport (wagon).

In this context it refers to Turbo. Often, people will append T to indicate they have the turbocharged version of the engine:
300DT: 300D (sedan) with turbocharger 300TD: 300D station wagon 300TDT: 300D station wagon with turbocharger ...etc. You get the idea. The car isn't badged this way, but people like to indicate what engine they have, since the 3-liter engine came in both flavors, with turbo and without. - Nathan '83 240D, 255k miles '00 New Beetle TDI, 28k miles |

Thanks for everybody's input so far. Yes, my '79 W123 has the funky Klima servo but no water leaks!
So maybe a later model is a good idea. It'll come around. NCarter: What a shame! That IS a very nice example of a 300CD. I keep seeing one on and off around my general neighborhood. I may leave a note some time. Thanks!

I've got a gold 83 that I will be selling soon, I am getting a new pick up and keeping the SL.
The CD has 247K miles, everything works, no rust, turbo at 11#, alda 1 turn ccw. I change oil at 3500 and it will use about 1/2 qt. If anyone has an interest you can contact me at oktrux@bethstar.net. Thanks, jerryb |

Earlier in the thread I mentioned that I was giving up on getting my 300CD repaired. Friday I went to Fresno, to a frame shop for an estimate. The gent there took about five minutes to look it over and said it would take them about twelve hours @ $60/hr. to fix it. AND they would save the quarter panel to boot! The lowest previous bid had over thirty hours labor in frame strightening, trunk strightening and quarter panel removaland replacing, plus almost $500 for a new quarter panel. So in a couple of weeks we'll be heading for Fresno. Here's a shot of the bad side. Ernie |

Alright Earnie!!
Back on the road again. Fresno sounds like a place where folks are more laid back and not so burdened with expensive overhead like in San Francisco etc. I'm driving down to San Diego in about a week myself. Glad for ya.:p
