'78 300D - Replacing gear shift knob???

Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the gear shifter on my automatic trans 300D? I can see a locknut - I think - but I can not figure out how to get to it. If I loosen this nut, does the gear shift lever unscrew?

I got a new, nice zebrano one for Christmas...

It`s been a while since I took mine apart but I think I removed the
ash tray, then the two screws that hold the metal bracket for the ash
tray. lift it out, and the wood slides back. gently lift up there will be a
bunch of wires for the switches that will give some resistance.
the nut on the shaft is just a lock nut. loosen it and unscrew the knob.

If you try to lift up on the wood, the tabs will break off that hold it down.
that is why it has to be slid back.
someone did that to mine before we bought the car. so now it raises up
in the back.

Push down and slide forward and the tabs should lock in.
