CV joint
On my 1980 300SD one of the boots started leaking, so I stopped driving the car. I now have the axle off, removed the leaky boot, now my question is, should the cv joint be very stiff, I thought it should move very easley. did I damage the cv joint when I removed the axle?

In short no they shouldn't be stiff. If they are stiff, and the boot was torn you might get luck and be able to put new CV grease in and they'll loosen up. But if you ran them very long with a torn boot the CV is probably toast.

there was pleanty of oil left in the boot when I cut it off. on my 1970 VW the cv joins were loose as a goose, even new. I did have some trouble geting the axle out. I will find out shortley if it is still good.

my boots are starting to crack pretty good, its too cold to tackle the job until maybe march. i sprayed em' with some armor all to try and soften them up a bit, im now wondering if i should maybe try to smear some silicon or something on to hold them together for a couple more months, any recommendations on a suitable goop. ive seen the youtube video of the guy sliding the boots on over a greased up funnel, what kind of boots are those ? where do you get them ?

The boots on these cars will look bad a long time before they actually crack all the way through, I wouldn't worry about it till they fail.

When they start doing this its time to replace it.

My boots have looked terrible for about 2 1/2 years and still no leaks. They will go quite a while with cracks.

A straight sling like that comes from the CV boots in high speed driving.

Pierre had a parts car with a couple axles with good boots, so now my 1980 300SD is back on the road, I am so happy now, she was down for 2 weeks. During the 2 weeks I drove the 1970 220D it is nice but nothing like the 300SD. |

Ya you need a Flexx gun to do boots.

Well, we saw the video, had a good axle, and you never know till ya try.
It was pretty funny, 2 people trying to pull a boot over a transmision funnel & axle. I did bring my video camera incase it did work. I still can not believe the rubber will stretch that much, even with a Flexx gun. |

I don't know about cracking, but my boots have no smooth outside surface at all. They look more like sponges. I've been spraying them with rubberized undercoating in the late fall, just in case, for the 5 years I've had the car. No problem, yet.
I did a web search a couple of weeks ago looking for "rubber spray" in a can. They do make it but it's expensive. Something like 50.00 or 60.00 bucks for a 8 ounce can. I mean, here we are spending big bucks and labor to replace axles all for the want of a piece of rubber. I wonder how long an axle would last if we could keep the rubber intact. Who has gone the longest.
