What is the life expectancy of a W126 fuel pump?

Mechanic told me that he was astounded my original one was still working at 122,000 miles, and it should be replaced as preventative maintenance.

Said if I didn't do it soon, it coud die unexpectedly and I would be DRT.

I am a believer in the idea of preventative maintenance, but this one got me by surprise.

Would you suggest I do this now, at this mileage? I never read about this in the owners manual, or if it is there I must have missed it....

So far as I know, everything in this W126 is up to date, including the fuel filter (done in Nov. 2007) and all other fluids, filters and parts in the car....

The Tech Help forum would probably have a better answer.

When a mechanic wants to replace an expensive part like that as "preventative maintenance" it is usually to pad the bill.

afaik, none of mine have been replaced... they are really just supplements to gravity, so they don't work that hard...

Are you sure that the mechanic was referring to the fuel pump and not the primer pump? There should be no surprise at all that the fuel pump has lasted 122k miles. Primer pumps are another story.

Isn't a primer pump only on a diesel?

When someone asks a question about a W126 in the diesel forum, I am going to assume that the question pertains to a diesel W126, regardless of what other vehicles the poster might own or not own.

Hmmm, There have been many, many miles reported here but when I did a search, I couldn't find anyone who has reported changing one out to cure a problem on the diesel engines. I would suspect the mechanic is thinking along the lines of many gasoline engines, which use a diaphragm-style pump.

if you are asking about the gasser in your sig, the only gasser experiance I have is with chevies. and YES the fuel pumps fail after about 120K... electric fuel pumps that is... mechanical pumps fail when they leak. so I gotta agree with forced, get more gasser specific info from the Tech forum...

And that means that he cannot ask a question about a diesel?
