alternator different from 79 to 81 on the 300D?

Greetings,

Is there a difference between the alternators on the 79 300D vs. the 81-85 alternators? I know that the glow plugs are different but I am not aware if that is the only major difference in the engines.

My Alternator which has been on borrowed time for a while finally died and I need to buy a replacement today. The caveat is my 300D is a 1979 model with an 81 or later engine - replaced by the previous owner.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

NA's had a single belt, turbo's double. (I think). May not make a difference in buying an alternator because some come without any pulley's and you have to use the old one.

Well that certainly helps. The Napa guy was saying he had one that was a double belt model which confused me since mine is only a single.

Thanks,
Scott

Find a Bosch AL129X and install that one. It is a direct bolt in and will give you 115 amps! They were factory on the Saabs in the late 1980's

here is a thread on how to install it...

"Alternator" 115 Amp Bosch AL129X works in 123s!

You simply need to remove the pulley from the old alternator and use it on the new one (If it has a serpentine belt) and change the wiring from the junction box to this arrangement. One large 10ga or 8ga wire from where the two small wires were attached to the junction to the B terminal on the alternator (the large bolt) and one smaller wire from the terminal that went to the small blue wire the small bolt.

I did it and it works great!

the 79 alt is only rated at 45 or 55 amps, the later ones are from 65 to 80 amps depending on model... I also think there were some different brackets on the older motor... not sure though.

It made a huge difference going from 65 amps to 115 amps! I can run the radio, defroster, rear defroster, headlights and wipers without getting low voltages!

On a side note, what is the purpose of having two pulleys? Safety so that if one breaks, you're not stranded? Why only on the diesel models (if so)?

Thumbs up

well, I decided to go with the 81 alt since I just need to get the car back on the road with out turning it into a project. The guys at Napa had one in stock that was a single pulley where as the 79 was only available in a double pulley configuration.

One of these days I will look at the Saab conversion, but for now my needs are minimal and the 81 should suffice.

Thanks for all the help!
Scott
