123 Steering Box - somewhat new question
I've come to the conclusion that my 1981 300D steering box will need replacing, probably during the next warm/non-rainy period here in Seattle (July and August about covers it). I've verified that the slop is in the box, as the Pittman arm does not move during steering wheel free play. Also, the linkage from the steering wheel to the gear box is fine. The CCW adjustments I have dared do have made no difference (1/4 + 1/8 + 1/8).
My 300D has 202K on it. I'm faced with a rebuilt with core hastles or a used box. Does a used box make any sense, given the work involved in replacement? I have access to used boxes from claimed low mileage cars - how long does a steering box usually last? Or should I attempt additional CCW adjustment on my box? (the play in my steering wheel is slightly greater than the MB spec. of 25mm max) Erlend |
Try to adjust it more before you replace it. What have you got to lose? 1/4+1/8+1/8 = 1/2 turn.
I ended up turning the adjustment on mine several revolutions CCW to almost max, before I got the play to an acceptable level (approx 1/2"). Just make sure the steering wheel is centered before you adjust. |
