Why put in a diesel engine.

One of the reasons it would be done to to increase the MPG figures.

People here are always crowing about how many miles a gallon their diesels get, correct?

My point was, and is, simply this. The TRUE cost of running a car is in dollars per mile, (not only fuel mileage), which takes into account also such things like cost and frequency of repairs, insurance, garage costs, depreciation and other factors. FUEL MILEAGE IS BUT ONE MORE FACTOR, in determining total cost per mile to run a car.

I submit to you that fuel economy is indeed, and ALWAYS has been, one of the BIG reasons, people like to run diesel engines in passenger automobiles.
(It is ABSOLUTELY true in Europe where strastospheric gas prices practically FORCE people to buy diesel engined cars, plus some countries tax cars over there based on engine displacement.

"Unique and cool" factor you're kiddng me, where over 60% of the cars are diesels???!!! Shome mishtake shurely...

....Where any M117 powered vehicle will easily lose that war just based on routine maintenence.

If I were to perform such a swap, it would have to be with a modified 603. Screw the 606. It is indeed superior with the 4-valve design, but unless you are willing to spend mega-$$$, and are looking for an involved project with an end result of having little room to work on anything, its not worth the hassle. The 603/606 get more than twice the mileage of the 560.
. Modify that thing to at least the power level of a Euro high compression 560, and you'll do alright.

That said...I love the M117. It is very easy to work with when you know what you're doing. Its just some of the black boxes are ludicrously priced. Power is nice, except when using that power I can practically see the fuel gauge needle moving towards R at WOT.

There are a few SD's on our local craiglist. Also check Kijiji.ca. Parts car a must. I've done several VW jetta gas to diesel swaps, and the things that you will most likely have to contend with is the tank, removal of fuel pumps, wiring up glow plug relay, exhaust, and since your dealing with a gasser - and a rear wheel drive to boot - the rear differential..Lots of work. I would say look for an SD, and use the 560 for parts....

Why bother they made the 300/350SDL's? Its a factory swap so not a hack job.

You will need to have the two cars side by side to do the swap, they changed a lot. For starters the 560 has SLS suspesion that you will need to convert over.

Icefire

More power to you. I backed off the project as I have one too many on my hands already.

I gotta replace the steel brake and fuel lines on my SD and replace a diff oil seal. And my wife has her eye on a 380SL so I have a whole new drivetrain to learn.....

Of course its the milage thats the light at the end of the tunnel, but if it takes 40 hrs to do the swap and your time is worth $30 an hr, with diesel @ $4.29 a gallon, its gonna be a LOOOONG time before you pay that off, I think it comes down to 'kewl factor' and self satisfaction in a job not easily accomplished. no mistake I ashure you.
