If your car is declared to have "failed the emissions inspection" (in California) then registration renewal is denied you, which makes it unlawful to drive the vehicle on the street. THAT is constructively "taking your car away from you" becasue you are no longer allowed to drive it on the street. It may still be in your physical possession, but in the eyes of the state, it is no longer a car anymore. For all practical purposes, it is now a paperweight. And in ANY state, driving a car on the street with expired tags.... well you know what happens if you get caught by the Police trying that...... Further more, in some areas, the diesel fuel is dyed, I heard. In those places, if you try using biodiesel or other fuels, and you get caught - and you could - using "Untaxed" fuel (that is not dyed, and they can actually prove it) then , as they say: "Boy, you be in a HEAP of trouble"

Even B5 and B20 has that problem. Mixing BD with something is not the magical solution you think it is.

Interesting. Ive done it with biodiesel in my freezer and it doesnt begin to gel at those temps when mixed. But I digress. I guess it could form crystals which would clog the filters, even if it wasn't gelled. And i also like how you saw "biodiesel" and decided to flame on it again, even though it was just a suggestion that if it were reality, it would help the proliferation of diesel technology by making people realize that these aren't dirty engines (as it reduces smoke and co2 emissions, and smells better) and then maybe we wouldn't have to worry about people complaining about bus soot and ignorant CARB *******s trying to ban diesels because they smell different and must be more carcinogenic than gasoline engines
And I know induction will quote me on "(as it reduces smoke and co2 emissions, and smells better)". I know, co2 emissions stay the same or are worse, but their neutral emissions thus do not contribute to climate change. But Induction doesnt believe in that either, so screw it.

I'm not bashing BD simply because you brought it up, I did because you put forth the idea that BD is the perfect solution to everything when it is far from it. BD is a great supplement to our fuel needs, it will never be able to replace it entirely due to crop limitations and temperature problems. Current quality issues are not helping things either.
I do agree with you 100% that CARB is misplacing its focus/hatred towards Diesels when there are far worse things out there (Old power plants anyone?). Last edited by ForcedInduction; 01-25-2008 at 06:43 AM. |

I think it is sustainable at least in diesel powered mass transit, which seems to be what a great deal of people complain about. I also think its sustainable in other diesel powered services like trash, government operated tractors, you get the picture.
I dont think it is the perfect solution to anything, I just think that it is great fuel with great possibilities and can help lean the idea that diesels are filthy, stinky cancer causing machines

Right. For fleet, public transport and government vehicles it would be great but we don't have enough crop resources to supply even a percentage of the mass population's daily consumption, which is why the E85 hype is such a joke.

The turf and lawn care industry is experiencing it right now. No applications around elementary schools. Well, middle schoolers aren't that far removed from elementary schoolers so let's extend it to middle schools next year. Then the following year it's well, if it's good for the M.S. it must be good for the H.S. The next thing you know there are no commercial pesticide or fertilizer applications allowed in the town/city then the county, etc. Which is all well and good until the sportsfields start going to $hit and kids start getting injured thanks to inconsistent playing surfaces. Home lawns will be the next targets since they are merely "cosmetic". Then golf courses. So could be the same with old diesel cars specifically and old cars in general, especially in California. Then in all of the states who have adopted CA emissions standards, namely the Northeast less New Hampshire. The well hell, if it's good for CA and the NE why not state X? And on, and on...

Colorado air panel looks to California program to curb car emissions
Berny Morson, Rocky Mountain News Friday, September 21, 2007 California motorists will pay more for cars that emit less greenhouse gases, but they will come out ahead through energy savings, a Golden State official told a Colorado air-quality panel Thursday. The price of a passenger car will go up by $367 to meet California's 2012 standards and $1,064 to meet the even tougher 2016 standards, said Charles Shulock of the California Air Resources Board. "But it's important to note that cars that meet these standards are more efficient," he said. Average monthly payments on car loans will increase by $7, but fuel savings will be $18 under the 2012 regulations - cutting costs by $11, Shulock said. And those numbers were figured when gasoline was $1.74 a gallon. The savings under the 2016 rules is $3. Shulock was in Denver to speak to the Regional Air Quality Council. The group is charged with making recommendations to the state Air Quality Control Commission and Gov. Bill Ritter on steps to reduce both ordinary pollution and greenhouse gases along the Front Range area. In addition to tougher fleet standards for cars, California is tightening restrictions on the kinds of fuel that can be sold. Andrew Spielman, an environmental lawyer who leads the Regional Air Quality Council, said that the panel is paying attention to the California program, which have been copied in several other states. "We're actively seeking every idea we can find," Spielman said. The panel is set to hear from industry, local experts and ordinary citizens at future meetings. The panel has not been told specifically to consider the cost to consumers of improving cars or savings on fuel, Spielman said. But the issue is sure to arise, he said. California has set a goal of reducing greenhouse gases to 1990 levels by 2020. That will be accomplished by a variety of small improvements on cars, Shulock said. For example, cars might have six-speed transmissions. The goal is a one-third reduction in emissions. Meanwhile, manufacturers will have to produce fuel that contains less carbon, the basis of greenhouse gases. That can be accomplished by using more bio-fuels, such as ethanol from corn or switchgrass. The low-carbon fuel program begins in 2010. The exact specifications of the fuels have not been set, Shulock said. But the standards will become stringent between 2010 and 2020, he said. Counting the cost To reduce greenhouse gases, California is mandating that residents buy more expensive, lower-emissions cars. But experts there say that motorists will save money in the long run. • $367 is the added cost for a new, low-emissions car. • $7 is the monthly car payment increase, but . . . • $18 is the monthly savings in gas, so $11 net gain monthly. Have you ever been here. Come out for a visit although we do have hills (mountains to people in Florida) and we have curves in the roads un like Fl. I lived in Fl for 5.5 years and I was so glad to get out of there when I left.

Aren't Europeans generally very sensitive to air pollution issues? I thought so. Diesels are a lot more popular there, so I have to assume that this has become an issue purely because of an uninformed prejudice rather than any facts.
Remember the outcry (by actors who were Californians) against Alar on apples. It was baned. Then it became clear there was absolutely nothing wrong with Alar. . . .

As I see it
All political grato .The politicians ,to keep busy , do nothing but pass more laws ,sense California is enviromental friendly, the logic is to pass more laws leaning that way .Kinda of like make the people feel good about their Governa by passing more laws to give you less freedoms .A real mixed up way to live ,but their it is..READING THE FINE PRINT ,it mentions ("VEHICLE SELLER AND BUYERS").
Sounds to me if you were to go and sell your diesel vehicle they wont give you a sticker unless you buy this exhaust do-hickey ,they hold THE GOLDEN TICKET.Someones lining their political back pocket with future campaign money VIA company X. If you look deeper into all the retoiric of political upper class youll notice their all Lawyers. Most of the gents ,and one lady, running for Prez is a lawyer. Our whole country is run by lawyers .The Ambulance Chasers Alliance. The only one I know of thats not is Ron Paul ,who is a doctor. |
