I was drawn by the prospect of running on vegetable oil but I stayed for the classic good looks and well thought out mechanics

I hate check engine lights

I own 2 cars- a 96 VW jetta 4 cyl gasser- the 2.0L ABA engine - and I love it- it has 245K on the odo, only had one new clutch and I drive like its stolen everyday an it is still solid running, although the undercarrige is beginning to fall apart- so I am drawn to durability. anyhow, Ive had a check engine light on for almost 3 years. its is such a pain to look at everyday. So, this car is my winter beater.

I picked up an 1984 300D about a year ago because my best friend had just purchased an 1981 240D ( a horrorshow car if you must know) but I really enjoyed the sound, the engineering, design- the look. It was different, classic and purely mechanical. Plus, I never need to worry about passing inspection because of a stupid light.
I love the bio-diesel option, the fuel economy, and the cruisability. It is just a cool car. :D

Car was a hand-me-down, like being different, just needed wheels and found one at the right price, old German engineering, love M-B and this is an affordable entry point, SVO/WVO, biodiesel, like to do your own wrenching, etc?

I can't really explain my fascination with them (which I've had since my 20's although I'm well past that now :) ) other than I like the body lines, diesel fuel and the simplicity. But then again, I've always been somewhat contrarian as far as my tastes go. At least compared to the rest of the kids I grew up with in suburbia.

They are somewhat of an odd choice for a younger person, especially someone in their teens. Let me know why they float your boat?

Well I'm 23 and still at uni (collage in the US?). My uncle has several old MBs, and he's taught me a love of solid machines (other things include WWII US trucks, Old Landcruisers etc.) that are built to last forever and you can't kill them. I also love the simplistic and elegant lines of the old ones. And the chrome.
I hate plastic, and electrics, and high revving engines. So MBs are very high on the list. I also have a deepdown interest of using bio, just made a first test batch today, and will be testing it soon.
