Hood Release -W123- how to open hood w/o?

The 1979 300D's hood release from inside the cabin does not seem to release the front hood pull tab.
The manual lever pulls back all the way but does not actuate hood release.
I can use my fingers to pull out the tab from inbetween the exterior front grey grill, but pulling the tab out further does not pop the hood lock.

How can I open the hood in order to investigate further????

Thanks

un do the cable from inside the cabin and pull on it with a pair of pliers. (leave the sheathed end in the holder).. I had to do that it worked.. once then it snapped and I had to break the old grill out of the surround to get to the latch mechanism. I've gone through two cables so far... I need to readjust the current one.. its lost its "pop"

it could just be a stuck hood, too- maybe have someone pull the release while you try pushing and pulling on the hood....then, if successful, lube the latch before you close it....

Isn't there a small, plastic threaded deal about halfway along the cable that lets you adjust it? Of course that would only help once you got the hood open.

Thx

Thanks you all, did not have much sleep last night and was at it full all day today. So, I did not have time or energy to do an archive search.

Thanks a bunch for your tips.
I'll see what gives on it and post.

My handle broke a few months ago and I just hold the cable and pull on the remainder of the handle. It actually works quite well and it is kind of a lock to keep others away from my engine.

how to adjust cable

That link is great ! Tahks

Ihad a few minutes between appoinmtnets today to check my hood release and post an update.

I decided to remove the under dash cover to see if that gave the inside hood release handle a bit more room to clear the final unlocking.

IT DID.

I tried resinastalling the under cover panel several times and each time the final throw of the handle was just shy of unlocking. i.e restricted by the panel.

I now suspect that the cable may have stretched a bit. I had removed and replaced the under dash cover recently because of work I did in the area.

So, I suspected the panel but I didn't see that it does NOT fit correctly after several reinstallations. Is there a way to get at the adjustment 'assembly' that seems to be at the cable end under the hood latch?
Basically without removing alot of stuff?

How is the adjustement? clockwise to tighten? opposite to loosen?

I seem to need to remove about <1/4 inch or less slack. Not much.

Also could this 'slack' indicate possible cable breakage later? Based on memory I do recall now being aware over many years that the hood release was actuating farther out with the handle pull. Time to replace cable before it breaks? Is there a wire screw-crimped nipple at the end of the hood latch where the wire can be reset taughter ?

Thanks.

At least I can now open the hood but my underdash panels are removed for now. One less thing to deal with phew..

Did I miss something? I didn't see anything about adjustment, just removal, replacement and lubing. Is there an adjustment?
