Help identifying broken line
 

While wrestling with a stuck ALDA my fat arm broke a little plastic line. While trying to trace it I managed to break it even more. Does anyone know what this is? The car seems to run ok except it is shifting differently but that might be because the ALDA is off of it right now. This is an 87 300SDL.

It's a vacuum line, that's why its effecting your shifting. You'll need to replace it.

That line should connect to the vacuum pump at the front of the engine. Trace it from the 5-way fitting between the front left corner of the valve cover and the upper radiator hose.

Thanks for the responses. It comes out of the 5-way connector at the lower right. I believe it is attached to VCV based on further reading. I was just curious if it is safe to drive as I'm not sure where to acquire vacuum hose on the weekend.

You can bridge the break with rubber vacuum line from any parts store.

Turns out I was able to repurpose the line to the EGR and use it to fix the break until I can get some new hose. Those hard plastic lines are very brittle. My transmission seems to be back to normal. With the ALDA removed it feels like I got a new car. Truly amazing. I've had it 4 years and it is performing so much better now than it ever has.
