Oil light goes on during turns - '87 300D

I have a 1987 300D and its great. For the past couple months though, I have noticed that the oil idiot light comes on when I go around turns. I have checked the oil many times and it appears to be full. I also tried adding more oil, but the light still goes on when I go around corners. The oil pressure gauge looks fine and I don't notice other problems, but it does make me wonder. When I look at the valve cover while the engine is running, it looks like there is plenty of oil in there. Any idea where this sensor is, and should I be concerned about this?

The light is just a level sensor. If you're sure the oil is up to the correct level and your pressure shows good, there's no reason to worry...probably just a bad sensor. I'm not sure where the sensor is, but I would assume it would be fairly low on the engine.

I really like having that light there. If you end up losing oil it will tell you before the pressure drops and engine damage occurs. Most cars have a low pressure light which only comes on if the oil is dangerously low or if a pump component is failing. Sometimes by that time (especially if you're on the freeway), it's already too late to avoid any damage. The MB light gives you an early warning.

Does this happen when you corner hard or just if cornering normally?

I am wondering if your dipstick might be reading wrongly....if it had a bad o ring or something that let the dipstick go in too far the dipstick might read correctly but your sump might actually be low.

The way to check is to change the oil and put in exactly what the book calls for and see where it shows on the dipstick.

The sensor is on the driver side of the oil pan.

Sensor is most...

likely good. You have an early casting of the pan-lots of us do. There were 3 or 4 revisions of the 603 oil pan because the oil LEVEL sending unit was a bit too high. (I think this is on the EPC) and it's a compromise between early warning, in time to do something like pull over and check the oil, and just an extra light to come one a second or so before you loose pressure.

As long as you have pressure through the turn, you're good to go.

Also there was a note about a dipstick exchange in these. Meant a change of colour from red to black or the reverse.

I was possibly fooled by the same symptoms when the engine had been stopped for an overnight.the oil level would be correct on a cold dip; but what was happening, I think, was that the oil filter canister was draining out by the o-rings (hardened and shrunken) on the filter center bolt and so would appear high. Doesn't happen any more.
