1987 300D - very rough idle at cold start

I recently purchased this car, with 219kMi. When it's warm, it runs pretty good, although not the smoothest of idles. Running down the road, it does great - plenty of acceleration and a smooth running engine. However, when I first start it in the morning (in the 40's), the engine really loads up, billows white smoke, stumbles, and barely is able to idle. However, after about the first 5-10 seconds of idling, I can depress the accelerator pedal and "clear" it out - once it reaches about 2,000 RPM, it's perfectly smooth, but the cold idle is horrible. I've followed this car with my wife driving and noticed no smoke at all. I've read a bit about an Injector Rack Bolt (gold vs. silver). Could this be it? Or the ALDA? If it's the Rack Bolt, where is it and how do I replace it?

Thanks,

Most likely it is a glow plug. Check the resistance of each glow plug, you will likely find one that is open / infinite resistance.

Also try overglowing the car at start. If the glowplugs are old and tired, they will not heat up as well, keep the key on after the glow light on the dash goes out and wait until the full glow cycle is complete, ... indicators are: Dome light brightens, "click" heard from the left fender, small blower under the glovebox speeds up. If you turn the key just as the relay clicks off it should start smoother. If not, probably a bad glow-plug.

glow plugs glow plugs glow plugs did i mention glow plugs?

You are having the exact same problem i was having with my 300D, the white smoke is the un-burnt fuel. Test the glow plugs themselves and make sure glow plug relay box has a working fuse. If they all test bad replace the glow plugs. After that you should be good to go.
