Transmission overfill question

I just discovered that my transmission is overfilled by 0.9 liters. The cold fluid level is 10mm over the MAX line this morning. The cold level SHOULD be 10mm below MIN on the 722.3 AT according to the manual. The manual also states that the distance between the MAX and MIN marks just happens to be 10mm, which represents 0.3 liters of fluid. So it I have 0.9 liters too much fluid. How long can I drive like this without damage to the transmission? I added the 6.2 liters of fluid as called by the manual after the pan drain and torque convertor drain this weekend, but there still must have been a few milliliters of fluid left in there that brought it up too high.

Probably until you have time to do something about it, and then some.

I'm not sure how the dipstick goes into the transmission. Does the dipstick tube enter the oil pan in the transmission (I know there's no oil pan, but "the place that the oil sits in") - and then let the end of the dipstick free-wiggle, or does the dipstick tube run down the length of the dipstick (and into the fluid pool)?

If it's the latter, you can just get some plastic tube and siphon out the excess backwards through the dipstick.

I've siphoned fluid out via the transmission dipstick before with a cheap topsider that I no longer have. I'll go find one of those things that sucks out a quart at a time at the auto parts store.

Or just use any old tube you find and save the money :-D

what i have done is with the engine running slightly loosen one of the transmission cooler lines at the radiator and allow fluid to escape in a drain pan, keep a check and do it until it is at the correct level,

i don't think 0.9L is all that bad... you might have an air bubble some where in the sysem that has yet to "burp" and when it does you will be right on or 0.9L too low...

Dumb question. Are you measuring "cold" with engine running or off? With engine off my 300SDL shows fluid way above top mark, but correct level while running. It scared me first time I looked at it with engine off.

Whats up H-town...My indy tried to tackle the same job this past weekend, only to find had the wrong filter and gasket, (bought from good MB online store) sales guy on phomne swore it was right part after the fact BLAH!

Is your pan the 4 boly one with the 1 hole and little neck on the filter?

We decided to put the pan back on and refill with some extra on hand fluid(so i could get around) woke up next day river of fluid in driveway..gasket must have left a small piece that was brittle..SIGH..Today I am going to dealer to get the damn right part....

I was measuring the fluid cold with the engine off. Do you think I ought to measure the level cold, but with the engine running for about 2 mins?

You cannot measure it with the engine not running. The results are meaningless. The cold level when running will be a bit lower than the level when hot........maybe 3/8" below the min line.........nothing to be concerned about.

Owners manual says to check dipstick while engine is running.

I'm trying to measure the cold level, which is 10mm below the min mark.
