W126 front end vibration

This is a strange vibration. The car will see the mechanic tomorrow in the morning.
However, I wanted to put this up for discussion.

It's not a wheel or tire issue that vibrates continuosly.

The vibration is kind of lingering until I get to 45-50mph and running straight with the steering wheel slightly off center.

It seems to come at a very certain speed and a particular minor off center steering position.

It shakes intensly almost as if the wheel would fly off, as I reduce the speed or the steering position, it goes immedistely back to the lingering mode.

Something has a play there, it feels like a horizontal vibration, not vertical.

Well, as I said the car will be at the shop tomorrow, I tried to narrow it down, but the front end is too complex without a hoist and without tools to get the spring load off all the joints and parts.

It will be interesting to find that one ...

The SD has some similar issues. Varying degrees of vibration depending on the steering position and the road speed.

The problem can be as simple as a worn steering damper, or it can be as complicated as multiple slightly worn suspension and/or steering bushings. Unfortunately, I don't think most shops will find any "smoking gun" that allows you to fix one item and cure the problem. If there is any noted wear on front end steering or suspension components, you'll probably get the standard "change it all" spiel.

I intend to do some suspension work, but very little steering work with the exception of the damper..........we'll see how the SD makes out with this approach.

Please post your results after the visit to the mechanic. I'll be curious if they are good and find something specific.
