Will vacuum at the fuel return line prime the fuel filter?
 
I'm in NJ. Friend in Ca called asking since his " primer pump" in his 82 300D is MIA. My 603 can self prime by cranking the starter for a couple of days.:D

Can a vacuum be stuck into the fuel return line instead of the hand prime pump?

Prob wont work since you've got a leak at the hand primer.

All dealers should have that part......

Hand primer on his car was sealed by po w/ hot glue.

wow - that sure explains the MIA part. That's one way incredibly short sighted way to fix a leak:)

Frankly, I'd get a new pump and wrench the old one off with some vice grips. He'll need the pump again sooner or later anyway.

FYI

An oil changer vac attached to the fuel return line works. He just called to tell me I am brilliant!:cool: I am going to keep this forum secret from him.:D

Did the vacuum pull fuel from the feeder line or the return line? If return, you may still have to deal with air the IP and the injector lines. But, good idea to try. I wonder if it will fill the secondary filter that way...

I think this method works because the banjo bolt on top of the spin-on filter lets you suck fuel through the primer and into the spin-on and then out of the return line. But its not sucking it through the IP (isn't that a fixed-displacement pump?) so you could still have air between the spin-on filter and the IP.
The reason I think this is because this method worked for me a few times, then I converted to VO, and when I did that I plugged that banjo bolt and changed the path of the fuel so that the lift pump sucks through both filters and pumps directly to the IP. Now using the vacuum pump on the return line does nothing but build up pressure. Which sucks (well it doesn't, and that's the problem) because now the space above the primer pump is filled with hoses, valves, and a heat exchanger. I REALLY should have switched to the new style pump before installing all the VO crap. Oh well, that'll be a fun day when I get to it :rolleyes:
