What is a good price for a 93 300D?
Ok, I live in San Diego and I'm hopefully looking at a 1993 300D today. It has around 200,000 miles and the guy says "everything works." So if this turns out to be true, what is a good price to pay? He wants $5500. Kelley Blue Book says the nicest 93 should cost $4800. So he wants more than their listing, but I don't think KBB really understands that these diesels are as popular as they are, especially in southern California.
Also, I'm really only familiar with early 80's 300D's. Anything I should know about a 93 before checking it out? Anyone think a 93 is a bad idea compared to an early 80's model? Thanks, David

You will like the '93 300D. The price is a little high in my opinion.

Price may be a bit high, but some parts of the country are different. If its a really nice car,NO rust, nice interior with no splits or tears in the seats ect and runs and drives well it may be worth it in your area. I really like my 91 and im happy that i didnt buy any of the older ones i had looked at as this is a much nicer car to drive. You probably can bargain some on the asking price, but dont be too long making up your mind as it will be GONE.
My $.02 Don

If everything works that sounds pretty fair in today's market. I'd bargain lower and go from there. They're relatively rare cars and when good ones come along they're often pricey. These cars go forever, a good number of forum members have 90-93 300D's that have over 400k on them.
These cars are more computer controlled than you might think. The wastegate on the turbo is controlled by the computer. The computer looks at things like the airflow meter and other sensors to control the EGR and idle speed. If any of these sensors is not working or disconnected, the computer will store a code and open the wastegate, resulting in no boost and a slow car. If you test drive it and it's slow (around 18 second 0-60 times), there might be a code stored. I would have the seller diagnose and fix the problem before buying, because sometimes tracking these problems down can be time consuming and difficult. It's also a good idea to check it over for the common 124 problems like the evaporator and such. Do a search and you'll find lots of info. Other than those little computer quirks, it's a great car. Easily returns 32+mpg on the highway while providing decent power. You get the quieter, smoother, and more economical 602 engine, and all the features, comforts, and great suspension and handling that come with the 124. The 93 will have had the w124 mid-life face lift with the slight styling upgrades, interior modifications, and a better sounding audio system. Overall, I would definitely recommend it. They aren't all that much more difficult to work on than the 123 with the 61x motors, and don't require valve adjustments. No 603 head cracking or rod bending problems to deal with either.

Doesn't sound unreasonable. If the 2.5T is rare in the U.S., it is even more rare in CA, where it wasn't sold. I think I've seen two in seven years in and around L.A. Don't think you'll find a better car for a better price.

Ok, checked out the car. Has 201,000 miles. The main problem it has which he guarantees will be fixed is that the shift points are all messed up. He had the tranny replaced recently and the shift points are now off. The tranny has a 50,000 mile warranty so he's taking it in to get it fixed this week. The mechanics think it's just a vacuum issue. Obviously, this would be a deal breaker for me. If it gets fixed, I'm probably going to buy it. Otherwise, I'll keep looking.
Ok, little problems, there are a couple dents on the car, just little ones, no bigger than an inch. There are a bunch of chips in the paint, not that it looks bad, but up close you can see them. The front two seats are perfect. The rear seat has a 1/2 inch tear, really small. The horn doesn't work but he'll have that fixed. The sunroof was slow to open and close which he claims will just need some lube, which he will do. I did notice a tiny speck of rust on the roof of the car along the sunroof, no bigger than 1 inch across and really thin. Appears to only be surface rust. No rust under the car that I could see. Car was quiet with not a single vibration which was amazing!! After driving an 83 that was quite a shock. The 0-60 wasn't even that bad even with the tranny problems, which I'm sure will improve once that gets fixed. What should the 0-60 be anyways??? Ok, what do you all think? Assuming the tranny gets fixed, what do you think I should deduct from the price for those little problems? Everything else worked, AC, heater, cruise control, all electronics. Thanks, David

I have a 93 and I love it but am selling it to buy a 300CD. That price sounds about right compared with what they are selling for on the East coast. I look online quite regularly and see people asking anywhere from 5K with 200K or more to 12K for one with 100K. Don't actually know what they are selling for though. I do know my buddy bought one here in NC for $3900 with 205K. It did need about $500 work to make it right. My 93' has 139K and I would not sell it for less than $6500.
