There are many places woodruff keys are used. Crankshaft, camshaft, power steering pump, alternator, A/C compressor, transmission, differential...
We need some specifics from you... |

a woodruff key is a half moon shaped bit of metal that fits into a groove in a "motor shaft" this "key" keeps pulleys or gears from spinning on the shaft. It sheers when there is too much pressure on the key protecting the motor, or pump. the gear or pulley will have a slot in it across the depth of the hole to fit over the key. do a wikipedia search and you'll find a picture I'm sure.

I don't think this is the intention. The key just transmits torque. There are shear-pin couplings that have an easily replaceable pin (sized specifically to shear at a specified torque) which are designed to protect machinery. But that's usually on farm equipment or conveyor belts where the driving motor could actually do some damage. On a car, all of the machinery behind the engine is sized to take more than what the engine can produce, so there's no need for that protection. Now maybe on something like a power steering pump...

Maybe he is referring to where to place them in the timing chain. I'd like to know the answer to this.
