Why do people claim their cars get that good of mileage when we all know they don't?

A friend of my step-dad has an '83 300D and every time I see him I have to spend at least a half hour explaining to him why his car won't get 30 mpg. He claims a friend of his also has a same model car and it will get that mileage. I tell him his friend is full of it or running off size tires or something, that he should be thankful to get mid twenties. Every time I have to run the reasons by him why it won't get that kind of mileage: age, weight, lack of aerodynamics on the W123, etc. but it is still so entrenched in his mind that he should be getting 30 mpg. Oh well. I'll probably pick the car off of him for cheap when he gets frustrated with his "abysmal" 23 mpg.

Those folks claiming that sort of mileage selling cars are probably hoping for that one unkowing person to pass by that heard these old benzes are tanks and great on fuel...nuff said, lol.

I never complained, I'm perfectly pleased with my 26-28, which is damn good for a 617 crammed in a 240 with a stock trans and 3.69 rearend. Plus it is far better than the 17 I was getting out of my F350 driving it daily until the car came along, & I am not wearing out my nice truck now either. Situations pend differently for everyone, but in my case I think I'm well ahead, with no complaints.

Even both of those claims sound too good to be true. My 07 dmax gets 14 in town and 19 on the road. My old 81 300sd never got better than 20-24 and my 616 seems to get 23 in town and 27 on the road.

Out on the highway we get 27 to 30 mpg with the 300D, but then we
have the 288 rear. best we got while checking was 30.86. that was with
the old eng. we`ll see what the new one gets when we take the next
long trip to Texas. in march.

That's just as bad as all the Dodge Cummins guys who get "26MPG all the time! Doesn't matter if I'm towing, running empty driving it hard or easy".

Riggggghhhht.

The VW crowd seems to be more honest, they usually advertise the TDI gets between 40-50mpg. If the buffing trend worked on them like it does ours, the TDIs should be getting 70-85mpg!

38mpg is still a 28% increase in efficiency over yours. Its just not possible.
