CHEAP one ton folding engine hoist
Diesel engines are too heavy for muscle power removal/install.
Here is a cheap one ton folding engine hoist to save you spinal pain.. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93840 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93840 |

Awesome, thanks for posting that....it appears to be perfect for our needs (compact when not in use).....haven't had to pull an engine though.....yet.

I have one that looks almost identical. works good.
once the eng. and trans is hanging on it, it`s a little difficult to roll it on rough asphalt, but worth it`s weight in gold. Charlie

that's the one I bought, it's just fine for most anything. I pulled a 454 full of oil out of a truck no problem!... haven't pulled any Diesels yet though... looks sturdy enough for me.

You get different ratings based on how far the boom is extended. Is 36" enough boom length to pull the engine out the front of the car? How close to the 1 Ton rating is the 617 and automatic transmission combined?
If I ever get into an engine change situation, I hope to have one of those overhead beam cranes with the two columns on each side of the car. As the engine goes up the car body gets pushed out from under it. Significantly safer but considerably more expensive. Just an opinion. Ken300D

I used one like that for my 603 removal, worked great. It did not work as well to put the engne on a trailer, couldn't get around the wheels.

Thats the one I bought. Folds up nice and small and takes up very little space in the shop. With the adjustable spreader bar life is good

i have the harbor freight one also, it is not well constructed but adaquate for most. get the harbor freight for general once or twice a year use (mine bent and does not sit level anymore), get the Sams Club one if you use it more then that Sam's-2ton . Just stay away from the Big Red branded one at Pep Boys, those are total junk, the metal is soft and they may not last one good diesel pull. I have had zero success with Big Red anything......

I have the Sam's 2 ton and have used it twice now with no complaints. Its very sturdy and at no time during the removal/install did I have to worry about it.

At home we have about a 12' davit with a 1-ton chain motor to lift the boat out of the water and onto the deck. If we had road access to the house and I could get the car out onto the deck it would work wonders
I do use it when the outboard motor needs to be swapped for the spare. Makes it a one man job instead of two or three . The Honda even has a convenient lift eye at the top of the engine at roughly the center of gravity so it lifts straight, which is really nice when trying to mount it on the boat.
