I mean, without diesel spilling out all over the place?

Just a guess...
I actually have never done this but wanted to once I got back from Europe. Does it still splatter when you drain the tank before taking the filter out? That was going to be my approach...

Drive it until it's as low on fuel as you can get it. Wear nitrile gloves. Lay a sheet of Oil Dri under the car prior to working on it. Have a large deep pan underneath to catch lots of fuel. Prepare to take a diesel bath -- unfortunately, if your in-tank screen is clogged at least part-way up it, you are gonna get wet. Last one that I did had a screen that was nearly completely clogged, yet the car showed 1/4 of a tank -- and you cannot drain it via the hose ('cause the screen is clogged!). So the main thing is to set expectations properly (read: gonna get wet!) and anything less won't be too bad, right?

Donkey,
Where'd you buy the Siphon hose w/ the ball. I've check Wal-Mart and they don't have such. Please advise. tnx, jeric |
keep in mind too
that if you do spill any diesel fuel on the ground you will NEVER have to worry about termite problems in that particular area.
