which is slower 190d or 300d
Found a nice 85 190D but it is an auto.
I used to have a non turbo 300D 123. I won't go to even look at the 190 if takeoff is slower than a 300d. I will never be able to merge onto major road from my house in it. Don

The 190D is peppier than the non-turbo 300D, but is only 1/2 the car. You can probably find a nice 1995 190D for a whole lot less than you will pay for a nice 1985 300DT - there is a reason the 190 is the car MB should never have built.

I've often wondered about that 190D vs W123s, Ive driven a couple (later model than W123s) seemed like nice cars, plenty of zip. The "77-"85" ones don't seem too have the "following" of the 123s. I wonder how the four cylinder engines compare.

the 190D weighs a lot less than a 300D.. even with the 2.2 litre engine and a 5 speed you might be on par.
a 2.5 turbo will blow any diesel of the era away a 2.5 non turbo 5 speed will be very peppy |

I'm still on the hunt for a 2.5 5 speed non turbo.. my friend has one I'm going to go work on today... soon as we get his soon to be delorean running I'm buying it!
I personally want a w201 190D 2.5 5 speed for the fuel economy.. I like my w123 for the stlye and mechanical simplicity.. but.. It doesnt give 35+ mpg on a bad day |

My 2.5 turbo 190D is peppier than any 300D of that era that I have driven, and it gives me great mileage. It is an auto, but there is a 5spd manual trans in my garage waiting to replace the autobox...that should make it even peppier. All I need is the right rear end!

Leave the automotive in the car. It came that way for a reason.

May I ask you what is the reason, except comfort?

The 2.2 is about as fast as a non-turbo 300D, 2.5 is as fast as a turbo 300D, 2.5T is as fast as the 87 300D/SDL.
The W201 is a great car and a good alternative to the W123. The common source of 5-speeds is reason enough to love them. |

I have never understood the tendency of folks to ridicule the 190. They were built for a reason the way they are. They were the entry level benz so they are naturally smaller and less luxurious. Because benz is a relatively small company the 190 uses many of the same parts as the bigger benzes, and mechanically it is just as high quality as the bigger benzes. It is smaller so it can be better on fuel...and it is.
I like them and one day probably will own one. Tom W

I know it's not the question, but my 190D is significantly slower than my 300TD.
Also don't understand the hate for the 190D. It's an awesome car. Probably the best combo of economy and reliability ever.
