Need small Mercedes '87 300 SDL part or at least part number.....

I noticed a rattling noise coming from my car...and I couldnt figure out what it was....well come to find out there is a rubber sleeve that goes around the bolt that goes into the block that is what connects the upper part of the hydraulic shock looking thingie that is part of the tensioner/idler pulley apparatus..it has totally disintegrated....

Sorry if this is confusing...but there is a bolt that goes thru the hole in the top of the hydralic shock thing that controls the tension on the tensioner pulley...this bolt has about a .25inch space in between the bolt diameter and the diameter of the hole in the hydralic shock it goes thru where a rubber sleeve is/was....I was wondering if anyone has one of these on hand...or if you all know a part number and who would carry this part......any help is appreciated!

If I am reading your post correctly it sounds like the upper bushing for the belt damper shock has failed, which is what usualy fails. You need to replace the shock you can't just get the bushing:

Couldn't I just find a rubber bushing that fits it could just slide in the space between the bolt and the shock? it looks pretty simple to fix...Where could I find a generic rubber bushing grommet to fit this?

If your willing to put some time into it you might be able to. Take some calipers measure the diamiter of the bolt, then the top bushing thats missing, also the width. You might be able to get pretty close then machine it down somehow. Its like finding a bushing for an old Lewmar winch or sheave.:D

I have found a couple rubber bushing companies...couldn't I just find out what the measurements are of the bushing and buy a new one that slide it on there...it doesn't look to be more complicated than that?

Its just the rubber part that went out...the problem is I no longer have a bushing to use to measure these things...does anyone have the measurements for this?

No

I have tried to repair these, it does not work. :(

One local owner used his model lathe to cut custom bronze bushings that he inserted with a two ton press, the tensioner noise transmission is terrible now.

Yeah they are loud when they go arn't they!

At a diesel meet a few years ago one guy thought he had a bad injector, but the noise a tensioner makes on a 603 is very destinctive. So I told him to pop the hood and pushed the tensioner in with my hand, no more noise.

You know, this thread might have solved my mysterious sound that has been getting louder over the past 3 months......

Turbopugsleylx 01-31-2008 06:45 PM

The thing it...I dont need to metal part...I have those I just need a bronze sleeve thick enough to slide over the bolt in that hole on the tensioner.......I think it would be a really easy fix....the hard part being finding the rubber bushing to fit it...

Turbopugsleylx 01-31-2008 06:48 PM

and also the measurements...

Turbopugsleylx 01-31-2008 08:10 PM

You know guys...my father pointed out something to fix this...he said ace hardware has a rubber grommet section....find a rubber grommet that fits the bolt and roughly inside the shock eye...and then put a washer on each side of the shock eye and thread the bolt thru it so that when it tightens it squeezes the grommet and gives the expansion needed to dampen the vibrations......it also keeps the grommet in the eye never to come out.....I think this fix will work and a much easier fix than replacing the whole shock assembly...

Correction, cheaper, replace the shock takes all of two bolts and 10 minutes.;):D

Turbopugsleylx 01-31-2008 10:08 PM

are you saying replacing the entire shock is cheaper than just the bushing?

whunter 01-31-2008 11:44 PM

Yes

No risk of damage + correct frequency damping.. :)

I tried to explain this to you in post #7.

Playing around with this shock bushing = added NOISE + added STRESS/DAMAGE on the pivot arm MB# 6012001773.
