83 300td wagon transmission swap

Hello and thanks,
I have a 83 300 td wagon with a bad trans, I found a good low mile one out of an 85, the owner says it is from a 300d, but he says that he checked and the trans will fit a CD or TD, but he insists also that it will only work in an 85?
Is there any truth to this? My references say that from 82 to 85 cd/ td/ and dt will work fine in my 83 wagon the trans and engine are the same as well as the chassis on some. If the trans is different what needs to make it work?
Thanks
J

The torque converter has a higher stall speed.

The trans is different, but it will work also. There is something about a higher stall speed torque converter....
The '85 tranny also has a tach pickup on the bellhousing, which your year model won't need. You need to go ahead and leave the pickup attached so the opening will be blocked off for water intrusion.

i have read somewhere about different sized pilot bearings, i was just about to post some questions in reference to this. I have an 85TD that needs a new transmission ( new from the PNP) what year range can go in ? true of false - transmissions from cars with turbos can go into nonturbo engined cars but not the other way around ?

Also, consider the fact that many people have come to this forum with what they think are bad transmissions only to find out that adjustments needed to be made. These MB transmissions are notorious for appearing to have serious problems when they don't.

thanks

Thanks for the info. The higher stall speed should be ok, it is a lower speed that would hurt, correct? The tranny is a 123 chas and a 1722.315 and so is mine and according to http://www.europeantransmissions.com/Application.htm everything is good? but not every number may match up, how important is all that?
Thanks again
