Can you pull a winshield from a 123 body without messing up the gasket ?

.

Hello Everyone

Has anyone ever taken the windshield out of a 123 body mercedes,
without messing up the gasket that holds it in.

If so, how did you do it ?

Thanks
Have Fun !
RichC

Yes and no. Is it a new gasket? Just pry it out I think. The window guys did it on mycar. If its not a new gasket you will need a new one.

I think it is possible. Just push on the windshield starting in a corner and , at the same time flip the rubber up and over the flange. Probably need some soft tool (like a toothbrush with the head cut off). I have never attempted this yet, but I probably will try it on my VW that already has a cracked windshield. Personally, I think this is a recipie for disaster as far as the glass is concerned....

Sure, it can be done, just don't forget to remove the lockstrip!

the aluminum trim in the gasket. If the gasket is more than 1 or 2 years old reusing is not a great choice.

removing the aluminum trim before removing the window will render it prezel-shaped....unless the gasket is already soft and crumbly.

Gaskets don't cost THAT muuch. I'd replace it if I was taking the windshield out. Seems like a cheap way to guard against a leaky windshield once the glass is replaced.

That is not fated to happen. If you work carefully and use a bit of lubricant (i.e. glass cleaner or 4:1 water:dishwashing liquid), there's no problem getting it out without damage.

Given that the aluminum piece's trim function is secondary to its lockstrip function, I'd question trying to remove the windshield without removing it first, unless you don't care about damaging or having to cut the gasket, which the OP is specifically asking about ("Can you pull a winshield from a 123 body without messing up the gasket?"). I also think you're likely to damage the lockstrip by leaving it in during the removal.

Quoting from the Mercedes Factory Service Manual 67-100:

Quote:
"1. Remove reveal moulding laterally on windshield (68-405)
Note: Do not remove reveal molding on top.
2. Slide back rubber frame on inside of car with a plastic wedge placed behind the spot-welded flange of the window opening.
3. Remove the windshield by pressing it carefully from the inside to the outside.
4. Remove ornamental frame on windshield (67-120).
5. Take rubber frame off of windshield."
I personally have not done what the OP asked. I have , however, spent more than a little time playing with those "ornamental frame" pieces and I can tell you that when they are bent they are bent for good. I would (1) believe the FSM and (2) just cut the whole gasket and spend the $40 for an aftermarket seal , which is just fine on the W123.

Rick

That FSM info is good to know -- thanks! That having been said, I've done it before and wouldn't be concerned about doing it again, but YMMV. Note, though, that the FSM does say you do have to remove part of it.

Rich C-

OK- its $46. If I tell you they will have to kill me.

Shawn-

The reference in #1 of the FSM is to the two interior plastic pieces that cover the inside of the "A" pillar.
