There's a clamp that holds the drain pipe at its lower part. I forget what it is bolted to. But that bolt was missing on mine, making proper installation impossible to maintain. I had to degrease the bottom of the engine to get an idea of what was going on as it had a coating of old + new oil. Now the bottom stays free of oil and the oil consumption is about zero. Can't say exactly how much oil is used yet because I have only gone about 2000 miles. So far though, there's no noticable usage.

I understand that the purpose of the device in the housing is to separate the oil vapors out of the crankcase air but my consumption will go from half a quart between 4000 mile oil changes to almost a half quart every 1500 miles. I checked my oil earlier this week and noticed it was right on the low mark after changing it and filling it a little above halfway about 1200 miles ago. On a whim I happened to look under the air filter, because I've made this mistake before, and the whole area had a light coating of oil. Removed the filter housing and lo and behold, the drain pipe wasn't connected. Reconnected it, topped off the oil, and I know from prior experience I won't have to touch it for 2500 miles till the next change. Anyone else experienced this?
I'm going outside to check this on mine today. I've got a 1983 300D that I purchased new in 1983. For the first 180,000 miles, the oil level did not drop between changes more than maybe 1/4 quart. It now has 203,000 miles and has developed seepage leaks from several places that leave a couple of quarter size spots every night. I found the level goes down to the add 1 quart mark pretty quickly and stays there. For the last two changes, I've refilled and left it at the add mark and have no seepage. So now I'm continually running at one quart low.

So far it seems that regardless of mileage or engine model, these diesels typically burn less than a quart at oil-change time. Also seems that the ones that consume oil, leak, and are possibly not burning a significant amount of oil.

Except for a couple of 3.5s, which again might not be typical.

Looks like cylinder/ring wear is not a top failure item.

Does anyone have experience with a low-compression engine's oil consumption?
