Oil useage poll

I see a lot of disparity on oil useage, am curious what normal is. Anyone willing to post data on their engine(s), it seems like this format should work

year/model/engine

Oil useage (qts/miles)

Miles, verified?

Oil brand/type

Leaks: Describe

I'll start, think mine is fairly normal

'79 300SD 617.950

~1 qt / 800 miles

208,000, matches VIN report

Winter: Shell Rotella T 10W-40
Rest of year: Shell Rotella T 15W-40

A few small leaks here and there. Major source of oil loss is at oil pan gasket. I need to get on fixing that.

All I can tell is that I don't have to refill the SDL in between oil changes (every 5k) and the 300D needs a refill of about 1 qt in between oil changes. However, I don't know how much they lose and how much they use. The SDL is leaking a little, the 300D a lot.

My 84 300TD seems to be going through a quart about every fill up and a half. That seems like a lot to me, but have nothing else to compare it to. this is my first diesel. Do they typically burn more oil than a gasser would?

1987 300D 603.960
1/4 Quart per 5,000 miles
235,000 miles, good estimation
Rotella Full Synthetic 5W40
Some dried oil on the engine, no spots on the driveway

1995 S350D 603.971
1/8 Quart in the last 2,000 miles
230,000 miles, verified
?? Car is new to me (3-4 weeks). Will switch to Rotella Full Synthetic in 2500 miles. Still evaluating oil usage.
No spots on the driveway

There should be a series of polls. Each one based on the engine type.

My SD with 268k went from significant oil loss (2.5 qts per 5000 miles) to almost nothing (maybe half a quart) just from replacing my oil pan gasket. It paid for itself right away! My car now almost never leaves a drip on the ground.

My dad's SD has a bone dry engine, it doesn't drip anything at all. It uses maybe 1/2 qt per 5000 also.

The 300D seeps a bit.....but not enough to lower the oil level....we've not had to add any to it in ages.

Well, now I don't feel so bad. I'll just have to start buying my oil by the case I guess.

Has anyone else ever noticed that if you remove and reinstall the air filter housing and don't get the drain pipe to the pan hooked up properly, that your oil loss goes up considerably? I understand that the purpose of the device in the housing is to separate the oil vapors out of the crankcase air but my consumption will go from half a quart between 4000 mile oil changes to almost a half quart every 1500 miles. I checked my oil earlier this week and noticed it was right on the low mark after changing it and filling it a little above halfway about 1200 miles ago. On a whim I happened to look under the air filter, because I've made this mistake before, and the whole area had a light coating of oil. Removed the filter housing and lo and behold, the drain pipe wasn't connected. Reconnected it, topped off the oil, and I know from prior experience I won't have to touch it for 2500 miles till the next change. Anyone else experienced this?
