how to start with bad primer pump after filter replacement

can someone tell if I can get my 84 300d turbo to start with bad primer pump after filter replacement? I searched and everything I find requires the pump. but my pump has zero resistance and no spring up. I assume it is stuck down. I have a new one coming in the mail for the coupe but it is not here. I was going to show the car today and now the darn thing wont start.

not sure on 617s but on 603s you can apply vacuum to the return fuel line to fill the fuel filter.

If you haven't ingested too much air into the IP from cranking it, you might get lucky and be able to pull off one of the fittings at the top of the filter and fill it with a turkey baster, long shot, but what's it gonna hurt to try?

Only other thing I could think of would be a bit of work, plugging the tank vent, LIGHTLY pressurizing the tank with compressed air (not a lot or you'll do bad things), and cracking the bolt at the filter until the air purges out. Might also need to do the injector lines too if you've been cranking it.

3rd option: It's a nice sunny Saturday morning, gonna be a nice day, dust off that old BBQ and a few beers and have a pre-spring summer reminiscence day.

I filled the filter, the first filter was monstrous big so i went and got one from NAPA that was the smaller size. I cracked the feed line to the IP and it is full so it is not getting through the IP as far as I can tell

no it wont, go buy the pump. It started right up once I put on the new pump and primed it like the service manual says

I would fill the new filter with fuel, and crank it like crazy, thats how the 603 works. If that fails then you are probably SOL until the new pump arrives.

I agree. I had the same problem, and once I replaced my primer pump (and pumped the hell out of it) my car started right up.

I agree, get a new pump, a black one.
For now, you can crank the air out of it However, that will take some time, and wear and tear on your starter and battery.
I understand the 603's are self priming, no exterior pump.

I cranked it for a long time and couldnt get any fuel to the front 3 cylinders even with the lines cracked. I would never do it again. I have a new pump for the coupe and It will go on with the fuel filters.

I filled the new filter with ATF and it started right up. No priming at all. (Mine is bad too!)

the dealer parts dept only charged me $38 for the pump, the next owner has a reset on the filters and now the primer pump too.

apply air pressure to the fuel tank and block the return line from the tank somewhow. (Not too much, or the tank will expand.)

You probably have it started by now. You might have sprayed some wd 40 into the intake and kept it running until the system picked up its own fuel and drove the air out. I think a guy could pull it off with a helper.

I got mine running w/ a broken primer pump. . .

Hello,
My primer pump is shot too. Fuel sparys out all over the place when I try to pump it. Through a lot of trial and error, and the help of some jumper cables from when I ran the battary dead, I finally got it going. I started at the back of the engine and cracked the fuel line first at the injector pump, and then cranked the car until fuel bubbled out. Once I saw fuel, I tightened it down again. I then did the same thing where the fuel line runs into the rear-most cylinder. Then I moved to the next cylinder and did the same thing, first at the injector pump, and then at the engine. After I had done this to the first three cylinders, I was able to crank the engine and give it some gas to purge the air out of the front most cylinder. Then it ran like a champ. It's time-consuming and took two people, but if you need your car running to get you to work on Monday, it should work. I also pasted the link to the thread on how to replace your primer pump below. It looks pretty easy.
