Should I Buy this car?
Local, pretty cheap...would compliment my 82 300d turbo and my 81 280ce.....how terribly underpowered are they?

With a 5 speed I would get it, not too many 5 spd around. could be rust hiding under the chrome fender strips.
the 240 won`t win any races, but dependable. 0 to 60 time, eventually. some 240 experts will chime in. Charlie

I'd verify that the listing is correct and that it's really a five speed. If it is you could almost justify buying it just for the transmission.
If it's a four speed, the price seems a bit steep, but it might be worth it depending on condition.

I certainly have read link after link about how horribly slooooow the 240D is...
But I gotta tell ya, mine is really very peppy - I have very little trouble keeping up with traffic - certainly off the line I won't take anyone with a reasonably tuned up car, but once I am in second gear and beyond - no prob. In fact, I blew right past a girl in a w124 300Dt Friday on my way home from work. Until I got the 300TD, I thought well it's just what I am used to, I just have never experienced the blazing speed of a 617 turbo engine - but now I can say that I have no complaints about my 240D speed. The 300TD is definitely faster off the line and at highway speeds, but I drove a Nissan truck, Toyota Matrix, and Jeep Cherokee (4L I6) in the 2 years before I got my 240D, so I was not really looking for Lotus-like performance - and I have never really felt like a menace on the roads here in traffic or other city driving. Having a manual helps I am sure. I would loooove having 5th gear, but with the 300TD taking over on highway drives now, I don't really even miss that. Seriously, for a manual 240D that is in good shape, I think the sloow-ness is vastly overblown. I say go for it if it's not too rusty and the engine feels tight. EDIT: about the price - if it's in good condition inside and out I think it's a fine price - especially now that GWB has helped push your dollar past our$ (My wife is from BC, so I hear alot about the natural superiority of western Canadians
