Uneaven brake pad wear?

Changing the rotors on my 2005 CDI, the brake pads were changed just over 15k miles ago, developed vibration while braking latley. Any idea what is causing this uneven wear on the pads?

Sometimes, on floating calipers, if the slide pins are not moving freely, one side will wear faster. Are those floating or dual piston?

They are clearly floating calipers, as you can see the slide pins in the image. Do these slide freely?

No. At the top and bottom of the piece in the image, notice the rubber bellows-looking things. Those are the sliding pins. Those pieces should move smoothly from one side to the other with finger pressure.

I doubt it, but perhaps so. I've never seen a set of pads that unevenly worn without finding that something was preventing the caliper from floating properly.

As Matt had mentioned......the whole front caliper slides back and forth on the two retaining pins or guides which retains it to the hub. As the one piston on a front caliper pushes the inside pad into the rotor it slides and draws in the outside pad at equal pressure against the rotor. If those guides are dirty or corroded the caliper does not slide and equalize the contact pressure of both pads causing uneven wear and vibration.
The best stuff to lube the caliper glide pins and other contact points on the metal shoe/pad plates is Sil-Glyde which can be purchased at just about any Auto supply store.
It comes in small packages for about $.75 to $1.00. It can also be used as an anti-noise application on the back of the shoe's metal plate.
Hope that helps

I'm surprised MB went to floating calipers...must have been because of the union with Chrysler.

Can't answer your question, but make sure you've disconnected the connector to the SBC unit under the hood. Otherwise you might loose a finger when the pump kicks in!!!

Yep, I made sure it is disconnected)
Just purchased a pair of Duralast brake pads from Autozone, the only ones I could find in stock.. I will lube all contact points

Ya I know! The fronts are floating on the my 98 and were used on the 96 or97 thru 99 E300 and the corresponding Gas W210 models. Backs are double piston/fixed. I cannot remember if they were that way on my previous 84SD and 87SDL

In my experience, it's pretty rare that the pads on floating caliper systems do wear evenly. It seems that the pad on the piston side almost always wears at a higher rate than the opposite one, even with well-maintained brakes.

I agree, Tango, but usually they're not quite so uneven unless something is binding.

I think they went to floaters long before that.
