Tach doesn't work on my 201 190d....
The tachometer on my '86 190d 2.5 5spd didn't work when I got the car a few weeks ago (for $1,800). I switched out the entire gauge cluster with a new one, but still no tach. Who knows what the sender looks like and where to find it? Any quick fixes to try before I start looking for a new one?

Do a search on KLIMA relay. It is located up on the firewall behind the battery.
Good luck, Tom

The relay behind the battery with the red top and a fuse, check the fuse.

KLIMA Relay
Thanks for the KLIMA info!
Someone at some point has taken a positive lead directly from the A/C compressor to the battery. When this lead is connected, the compressor locks up. Does this have to do with the KLIMA relay - does the lead from the A/C compressor sound like an attempt to circumvent and/or bridge a diffective relay? Can I swap a new KLIMA in and a new compressor and expect positive results? |

Check the fuse on the red relay. If it is blown or the relay is bad, the A/C, tachometer, and idle-control will not work. It is possible that someone bypassed it for this reason, many other possibilities such as the KILMA relay for the A/C problem but I believe that the KILMA relay does not affect the tachometer, only the load-reduction relay (red top with fuse) does.

Pins should be good, silver plated, best to not disturb if possible.
Usually the fuse, but the relay does go bad sometimes.

Well, I took a look at the relay with the red top and the fuse is fine. I removed this relay and the two others near it. All of the connectors looked fine, so I put them all back.
What's my next move? There are some relays listed on ebay in the $25 dollar range - should I buy a few and swap them out? Could it be a tach sender issue? |
